I drove 60 miles one way to show my recently restored ECO air meter to the guy who gave it to me. I also brought along a case of beer to thank him since he didn't want any money. Well after we had a few beers, he brings this out and asks me if I wanted it. I said: What is it? Turns out he "liberated" this from the same garage as the ECO air meter. The garage was not a service station but a company garage. This was used to brand the company truck tires. On the end are the letters DCL for "Dibblee's Construction Ltd". Around that are numbers used to burn serial numbers into the tires for inventory purposes. It was made by the Everhot Manufacturing Co., Maywood ILL. On the other end of the wooden handle is fitted with a special male plug for electrical power. The metal branding part has some traces of black paint and dried rubber on it. I am now faced with 3 options: 1- bead blast and re-paint the black metal part 2- soak the metal part in CLR to remove the rust 3- leave it as is What is the consensus?

...there's a Gulf one like this in one of Whitworth's books...leave it...
Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

IF you cleaned & painted it, the 1st time you plug it in it will burn all the paint off anyway. Probably never was painted.

By George Dick, you may be right. I assumed black paint but it might be some kind of blueing. It's definitely coated with something. Either way, I'm following everyone's advice and just cleaned it with soap and water.
