This might look a little strange... It's made of slag glass set in mortar, and features two abstract Olds rockets:

It was designed to be backlit. Here's a crude attempt using two lamps. We plan to build a lightbox with fluorescent tubes behind it.

But what is it?? Well... In 1966, Oldsmobile opened Building 70 in lansing -- their new administration building. Harold Metzel's office (the president) took up most of the top floor, and was divided by the "Rocket Wall." On one side was his desk, and on the other was a large triangular board room table (which is now in the R. E. Olds Museum). The Rocket Wall cost $15,000 to build, and featured illuminated rockets on both sides. When the office was gutted several years ago, the Rocket Wall went to the R. E. Olds Museum, but not all of it would fit. Two panels were sold, and this one appears to possibly be the leftmost one in this picture:

(photo credit Setting The Pace p.340)

We're quite anxious to get this piece of Olds history lit up again and displayed, but that'll have to come after the globe shelf...

This buy took several months to actually get into my hands. Thanks to Maurice Campbell it made it's way from the east coast to Dixie Gas and finally to Tulsa, OK where I picked it up. I think the Sunray lenses look very nice on this globe although you normally see them on an orange ripple.

Here is a 'Beautiful piece' that came in the mail today. An Ebay purchase and from an Old Gasser. Have to thank my wife for the bidding. I was busy at work and could not get to a 'puter'. Guess what pump this is going on!

I found this crate today sitting on the curb in front of what looked to be an abandoned gas station.

Now just have to empty some of them and give them a good bath. I don't think that any of them are extremely old, but it's a nice addition to my collection. The best thing is that they were FREE!!!

No Mark, I bought it at an auto swap meet. I doubt it was the same one based on price.

Mark and Ed, We have one of those as well. Also, about a year ago there was a nice one in a local antique mall. It ended up going for decent money on ebay.

Nice buys everyone. That Olds Rocket glass panel is really cool, thermactor. Thanks for the story behind it.

Jack R, good score on those Gilmore decals. They look like they are in really good condition.
