Has any one ever built a rat rod gas pump? Or put an artistic twist on a pump? Sure would be neat to see pictures if there is any out there. Thanks

I did not save any pictures but I have seen a primer pump with flames, one with flowers and trees on it, one covered in leather in a western cowboy theme and just crazy painted like an abstract painting.

A flat black pump with flames topped with a Ford globe, sitting in the shop by your rod/muscle car would look pretty cool IMO.

You talking about something like this... http://www.hotrod.com/featuredvehicles/hdrp_0704_1937_ford_patina_three_window/index.htmlI think it would be fun to do one with some cool patina. I don't think any of my pumps have "good" patina. Plus it's something different. Would be pretty easy to do too. Just put different colors of paint down, and then wet sand the areas you want to bleed through and when it's done, just put some flattner in the clear to keep if that way.

I was hoping that custom pumps would be a pump of the month at some time. I remember there was a guy in CA named Gas Pump Ronnie that did some great custom jobs. His were tastfully and professionally done with a themed twist to them. Maybe this thread can bring some of those custom pump pictures out.

LURKER, CUSTOM PUMPS AND CUSTOM CARS TO ME DON'T FIT INTO THE RAT ROD SCENE. I SAY THEY ARE TWO DIFFERENT ENDS OF THE SAME STICK.
A GAS PUMP DONE IN SEMI-GLOSS BLACK PRIMER AND PINSTRIPED IN RED & WHITE WITH A SKULL AND CROSS BONES FANTASY LOGO ON THE DOOR WOULD BE RAT ROD.
DICE'S PUMP IS TOO GLOSSY AND PURDY AND SHOULD BE IN A SHOWROOM WITH A CLASS OF HIGH-DOLLAR CUSTOM CLASSIC HOT RODS!

That is a beautiful flame job. A lot of people try and fail at painting flames. That one looks great! The Bengal pump is incredible too! I've never been a fan of the rat rod look but I do like the picture Doc took.

SO CAN WE ASSUME ANY RATTY LOOKING PUMP IS A RAT ROD PUMP? OR DOES IT HAVE TO BE TO RAT ROD STANDARDS....WELDED SEEMS, CRACKED GLASS, BONDO SHOWING, PRIMED AND CRUDELY PINSTRIPED AND A VARIOUS MIX OF ODDS 'N ENDS ATTACHED TO IT THAT MAKE PEOPLE SAY..."HUH?....COOL!" LOL!

We built a gate for a kid that started a web site called Killbillet.com and since then have really got off on the rat rod cars that were put together with fence post, signs, spurs, guns and you get the idea. I think a gas pump could look prety good done out of misc. pump parts along with some other nicely placed dodads. I have some old heavy broken up cast iron ornate fluted columns that I am trying to come up with a concept of a roman column clock face rat rod pump.

Hi Hillside,
Now I see what you are after. The possibilities are interesting. How about an old rusty pump with hubcaps for pump plates, acar emblem for an ID tag and an old headlight for a globe? I like garage art, that might fun.

ok, a rat rod to me is some kid in the 50's gets a 32 ford starts to hop it up in his back yard gets it running with a cad. or Lincoln engine, a lasalle tranny, maybe a quick change rear end. once the rod is in running shape it go's on the road and the kid drives it every where and guess what, the car never gets finish, that's why you find banged up and rusty body's, plywood floor boards, strip out interiors, thats the way i see it.
im always looking but never find, why........

I thought it always would be cool to build a pump, and try to incorporate parts from 3 or 4 different pumps into it. Wouldn't want it to be tacky like most of the "rat rods" falling out if the wood works these days though. Everything would have to incorporate with each other.

Hi all, Nice pump DoubleD!
I also like the rough cracked look of Docs pump. How did you do that, Doc?
There was also a long post some years back where Don, Oldtoydoc, restored a Neptune (iirc) and made it look as if it had been been out in the rough for years - any one has the link to that post? br Claes

Here is an idea.... Use a pump that has flat panels on all four sides. Take a few big rectangular ratty porcelain signs and chop them into new panels for the pump. Better yet, use non oil co signs...or a mix of several signs. Perferated "Crisco" can for a globe, pair of vise grips for the reset handle, old garden hose, and the rattiest, beat to h*ll nozzle you can find. Put a few bullet holes in the faces, maybe a few more in the panels. Use unrestored misc. stainless parts of various pumps for the exterior, so no paint would be needed.... the old GOC pumps would work good. Maybe not such a bad idea if all you have is the base, frame, top of that cabinet. I know it is politically incorrect but I had to do one with a Shell globe on top, it just looked too good on that top!!!!!

jkyocom I love the crisco idea. there's all kinds of ***** (stuff) you could put on there. Kind of like making a North Dakota Fence. What ever is laying around to seal up the bullet holes

Here's a couple of desk top pieces (gas pump & air meter)I had done which 'adorn' my office area. They aren't exactly what you are looking for but hopefully will give you some ideas. Here's some of the parts- watch; race for a ball bearing; pressure gauge; saxophone parts; chain link; freezer thermometer; brass acorn nut; belt buckle... You get the idea. Ron

"Rat rod" pumps, Dice's over-the-top or Ronnie's theme pumps would all be classified as custom pumps to me. Most I like, some I don't, but I like the creativity of all none the less.
I just thought I would suggest the opportunity to show them off. I probably should have started a different thread instead of hijacking the rat rod thread though.
