...some of these Texaco (and some Sinclair H-C signs as well) were made with a 'baked-on' black paint as opposed to black porcelain...don't know why, but it seems that's the case...I had a Sinclair H-C sign that I was washing, the same day I pulled it out from under a Richfield sign (very good day), and I vividly remember the black drop-shadow washing away from the surface of the sign, to my horror...I was just using soapy water...the rest of the porcelain (green, white, red) was fine - glossy, even...
...the same thing will happen to the label on a pyro-glaze pop bottle if it's buried long enough...
Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

DEF LOOKS THAT WAY...BLACK RUN NEVER DONE. KINDA INCOMPLETE...MIGHT'VE BEEN A BLEM OR JUST NEVER FINISHED. I HARDLY EVER SEE THE TEXACO AT THE TOP AND GASOLINE AT THE BOTTOM. MINE IS LIKE YOUR AVATAR DATED 1930.

Thank's for the input Gulfiend & Doc. That explains it. I had never seen one like it and was curious as to why it is that way.

Doc I have never seen that either. It could of been a sample for a different design that never went into production

I was wiping off a Pennzoil flange sign and the black date at the bottom wiped right off.It was a great price but after I did that, I thought it might be a repop and passed on it. Brady

I have seen a TON of Texaco signs missing colors...curb signs, 42 inchers, etc...evidently the fellow doing QC (quality check) liked to sip a bit too much or didnt really care if they had all the colors they were supposed to have...
