WAS WONDERING IF ANYBODY OUT THERE HAS ANY KNOWLEDGE OF A BRAND CALLED "SCOT?" AS A CHILD IN THE 60'S AND EARLY 70'S I REMEMBER THIS BRAND ON LONG ISLAND. WONDERING IF ANYONE CAN CONFIRM THIS FACT? HERE IS A PLASTIC SIGN I FOUND CHEAPLY AT A LOCAL GARAGE SALE ABOUT 5 YEARS AGO. WAS CURIOUS THEN, BUT HUNG IT AND ONCE AGAIN AM CURIOUS...

FROM A GOOGLE SEARCH I NETTED THIS PICTURE FROM GASSIGNS.COM
WHICH SHOWS AN UNUSUAL CANOPY SET UP WITH THE SAME SCOTSMAN ON THE ROOF SHINGLES. NOTICE THE STAIRWAY LEADING TO AN UPSTAIRS
OFFICE(?) UNDER THE SCOTSMAN LOGO ON THE ROOF!

(PHOTO AND FOLLOWING TEXT BY WALT WIMER):
"SCOT STATION FROM THE WASHINGTON, D.C. AREA AROUND 1965. THE COMPANY WAS PETROLEUM MARKETING CORP. OF MCLEAN, VA. SOMEWHERE ALONG THE LINE THEY WERE TAKEN OVER BY STANDARD (Ohio)/BP, BUT I DON'T KNOW IF IT WAS BEFORE OR AFTER BP BECAME THE CONTROLLING INTEREST IN STANDARD. I SORT OF THINK IT WAS BEFORE. THE COMPANY DID LIST IN THE NPN "FACT BOOKS" FOR MANY YEARS, HAVING 135 STATIONS IN 1974 AND GETTING AS HIGH AS 157 IN 1989.
AS FAR AS I KNOW THE BRAND IS NOW GONE, PHASED OUT AND INTO BP".

ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED....THANKS!

Doc.....I remember one of these stations on West Street in Annapolis, Md. It was on a lot next to the local lumber yard. Same signage etc. Cheap gas but the early 70's cruntch kinda put them out of business, "as I recall"....but since I'm getting older every day....I don't remember things as clearly as before!!!!

WELL ACCORDING TO WALT, HE SAYS THEY HAD 157 STATIONS IN 1989! IF YOU LOOK IN THE BACKGROUND OF THE STATION ABOVE THERE IS A LUMBERYARD "TATE" IS THE NAME. COULD THIS BE THE VERY STATION YOU RECALL IN ANNAPOLIS?
JUST CURIOUS.....??

I saw the flwg info on
http://www.us-highways.com/sohist1999.htm

Quote:

Standard Oil of Ohio (Sohio) During the 1980's, British Petroleum (bp ) increased its stake in Sohio as Sohio invested in the Alaskan pipeline. In 1972, BP/Sohio purchased McLean, VA-based Scot. Better performing Scot stations were re-branded BP, lower performers recieved Sohio's Boron. BP's attempt to use former eastern US Sinclair locations for its own marketing were less than successful. Most locations were sold to Fina (PetroFina) in 1973. In 1984, Truckstops of America (TA) was purchased by Sohio. In 1984, BP/Sohio purchased Gulf's southeastern marketing area from Chevron. Along the way, Gas and Go in Michigan and Gibbs in New England had been added to the brand portfolio as well. The southeastern marketing area of Gulf started a re-imaging to BP. In 1987, BP bought the remaining shares of Sohio it did not yet own. Sohio became just one of the brands owned by BP America, restricted by history to a single state. In 1989, the BP brand started to spread across the USA, starting in Tennessee with former Gulf and Boron locations. That went so well that in 1990, there was a nationwide transition from Boron, Wm. Penn, Gas-N-Go and Gulf to BP. That went less smoothly and many re-branded stations closed. In 1991, Standard Oil disappeared in Ohio, the red, white and blue re-done in green, silver, and yellow as BP. In 1993, BP America sold TA to an investment group. TA changed its name to TravelCenters of America in 1997. bp's website refers to Sohio only briefly in the bp history as 'Standard Oil of Ohio'. BP America moved its headquarters from Cleveland to Chicago after a merger with another Standard - Amoco.

Doc.....definately not the same place. The lumber yard was J.F.Johnson and it was to the rear and encircled the foreward edge of the station. I used to get gas there but truely recall that in the first gas crisis they moved out.

I can tell you that Scot Gas put out their own roadmaps in the 50's, maybe 60's. I had 1 before..it is a Rand McNally map..with the scotsman logo on the front.

Hi. Today while on the road, I stopped at an antique shop and found a women's rest room sign from this brand. After I left I remembered seeing a posting on this web site. If anyone is interested I could swing back and pick it up. I don't remember the price as I was looking at Texaco items primarily. What are they worth? It was in decent shape and two sided. I will be on the road and only able to look in once in a while.
