Hi,

I am going to paint my first gas pump!!! Hope I do ok!!!

I am going to use a PPG system. I heard it is very good.

I was going to start with DP90LP.

Then I was going to use a PPG primer. My question -

Can K36 be used as a high build primer sealer?

Or do I use K38 as the high build primer? And then use a sealer?


What girt sandpaper are people usingon the the K36/38? Is everyone wet sanding?

k36 is not designed to be used as a sealer, although you could reduce it and use it as one. Why are you using such expensive product on a gas pump?

I would use ppg's Omni line, still a very good product at a much cheaper price.

I would use mp 170 epoxy primer over sandblasted parts. Then do your body work and either use mp282 high build primer, or featherfill over the body work.

I would then use the Omni mp180 sealer and omni mbc base for your color.

You could use a higher end clear over the top if you wanted to.

I would not spend the money on the ppg product on a gas pump, the more expensive price is there to cover warranty issues and color match.

Yeah PPG Omni all the way. Gas pumnps aren't being driven around on the road, not worth it to spend all that $$ on paint. Omni's a very good product at a nice price and can be color matched to anything at a good paint jobber.

I agree with Ryan, use the less expensive paint especially if it's your first time painting.

Hi,

I was told the PPG is easier to work with then the Omni - and since I am a beginner that the PPG would be a better starting point. I am sure the opposite case can be made. I am open to advice and only starting to learn about the different paint systems.

Is there a big cost difference and quality difference (i.e. ease of use, etc) between the two products?

I have heard only the best about DP90 (especially the old lead product). I was intending on using it as a starting point. What about the primers, etc? Would you use a 1.8mm nozzle for the primers or larger?

Can I use Omni primer over the DP90?

What is the difference between K36 and K38? Are they both high build primers?

Gasoidude, you are welcome any time. I have 3 Bowsers to start on and then I have Wayne 60's, 36b, etc. This is a hobby for me. The problem is always finding the time.

I am learning about the time and money and skill to do a great paint job!!!

k36 can be used as a wet-on-wet sealer, but it requires a special mix. You can use the omni products with less expense and get a good result. The biggest difference between the two lines is Omni has more resins and less pigment which with some colors means that you have to have more coats to get full coverage.

K36 As wet-on-wet sealer from PPG tech bulletin
Mix Ratio:
DMD*, DMC Bases,
K36 : DCC Color or DCU2021 : DT Reducer : DCX8/DCX61
4 : 2 : 2 : 1
* DO NOT USE BASECOAT ONLY BASES.
Pot life of K36 Sealer is 1 hour at 70°F (21°C).
Pot life is shortened as temperatures increase.

Spraygun Set-up:
Apply: 1 wet coat
Fluid Tip: 1.4 – 1.6 mm or equivalent
Air Pressure: 10 PSI at the cap for HVLP
40 – 50 PSI at gun for conventional guns

Hi,

Then instead of using K36 - Then use K38 as the bulid primer? Then would you use a sealer (what sealer) before topcoating?

I will look into PPG Omni. I already have DP90LP and will start with it.

Greetings. I really enjoy the paint questions as I enjoy this trade and shoot my own pumps and several restored cars. Good advice comming down the pike for your question. I like one of the feed backs saying its not a car. I have friends that have squanderd good money on paints, House of Color and so on. The user friendly primers and bases and clears are only as good as your gun and techniques. Use whats affordable, I always have for pumps. I use brand names with not to complicated mixing ratios and Ive even put out killer paint jobs with Rustoleum cut with spirits. After a few days knock the heavy look down with wet 360, 400, then 600, squirt it with a decent clear, and your good to go.Who would know its Rustoleum? No one mentioned anything about the activator for the clear. (slow, Med. Fast) its so important on how the clear levels and how fast it sets. And what is the temp your spraying at? And yes wet sanding is good stuff but here you go again another art in itself. Then It needs buffing from ruff white wool pads to soft sponge pads and a world of cutting agents to go with it. Hope this wasnt too much input for your question but you will get the knowledge from asking and doing. Remember its a pump not a Bently! Roger

I appreaciate all the input. There are many execellent resources on this site. It is nice to get the advice and experience.

I am using the pumps also as a stepping stone. I have a 69 GTO from Nevada to do. It is very rust and dent free (took years to find). It has all the original components - even the exhaust (50,000 miles). I want the learn on the pumps and eventually transfer the experience and fun to the car.

Again, I am a hobbyist but want to learn the proper way to do things.

The Bowser has already been disassembled and sandblasted. I already have the DP90LP. Would like any advice what to use beyond this point.

It sounds like the Omni 282 bulid primer and then the mp 180 sealer would be the next step??? Can this be used over the DP90LP?

I can't give advice on painting though I should be able to. If you have a community college that offers auto body repair and painting classes go enrole. Thats what I did. I have been going over 15yrs. I have fixed 3 pumps 1 convertible and misc. other things. One of my instructors used to work at Wyotech and the other has been a bodyman for 25 yrs. When I have a question I go to them and they tell me what to do. I get a 10% discount on my paints and body shop supplys at the local NAPA and Dupont stores because I'm a student even though I'm 72 yrs. old. I even get a senior citizens discount at the college on tuition. They also have two professional paint booths we use plus a nice big shop. When I have a question on paints the tech at the stores tell me what to use. They are pretty sharp on the latest and love selling it to me. Then the instuctors will show me how to do it. Thats my story and I'm sticking to it. Mitch

Would you use mp 182 or mp 282 as the build primer? I am not sure of the difference.

Omni is half the price or less then the PPG Deltron line.

I use Slick Sand by Evercoat as a high build primer filler. You will need a 2.0 cap on the gun.

I have done both my pumps using Slick Sand and I think it great. Builds up nice, sands nice and can be painted over without a sealer plus its very reasonably priced.
