Pick this globe up today here in Albuquerque,N.M Wondering if this is real? it has made in USA on the bottom and the little notch is on top instead of bottom. Maybe a factory defect??? What to all you globe experts think ?

I dont think any repos notch there lenses. I would say yours is original. It could of been made to be in a body upside down to hang from a soffit or bay.

This was the other lens that was in the 15' metal globe body. It measures 14'7/8 wide I don't think they repoped this one in this size. dose this sound right?

I dont think they did either but I am not 100% on that. I have always liked the look of those Gasoline lenses in green & red.

FYI - ALL our new 15.0" and 16.5" reproduction lenses are notched at 6:00, Just like the originals.

But . . . ALL our lenses are marked with the year of manufacturee also - so no questions later.

A 12:00 notch would indicate a canopy mounting (up-side-down).

Some original lenses (mainly Ice Cream lenses) were notched at both 6:00 and 12:00.

Also - a 13.5" lense with a notch at 12:00 (and no slots at 3:00 and 9:00) indicates a lens designed for a Banded Body.

Later . . .

Jim

I am sure the originals are notched at bottom and does not have that made in the usa on the back.
Can you post a pic of the back of the lens?

Just looked in globe book... says most 15" should be dated.

Looking at the original globe in the book the "O" doesn't look right at all.

Not saying it's a repop... yet.

Try it in a very well lighted area. So far, the back of the lens looks good but very hard to tell in the dark. Got a flash on your camera??

looks good to me also. Not sure why the notch is at top other than it was meant to hang upside down.
Be careful not to put this in a body with a notch in the bottom as it will break the lens.

the books that I have seen with these globs all say made in USA on the bottom and another globe person that has one also says same thing. what worries me is the rough feel on the back of lens. and like Javis said the "O" kind of oval.

Grind away the dimple in a metal body Before installing lens, OR hang from ceiling like it was made to do.

That 'rough' feel to the back is a pretty good indicator that it is an old lens.

The new reproduction lenses have a very smooth back to them as the frits used are MUCH finer ground than they were 'back in the day'.

Later . . .

I was going to say what Jim said. Personally I would be more assured it was old if it felt "rough". I have one old Mobilgas lens that has the "Made in USA" on it, and it's the only one I've seen with the wording and I know it's original. I thought I had read before that the big companies used several different lens manufacturers and some have wording and some don't? I wouldn't have had any second thoughts on this lens if I seen it in a shop somewhere.

Interesting thought Richard. That very well could be the case, that marked USA lenses were made for "foreign" distribution maybe? Foreign being any place other than the US I guess since I'm unaware how broad the marketing territory was for Standard?
Something not brought up yet is this. Hi Octain, did you buy this item as an original and then have second thoughts on it's authenticity or did you buy it as a repro and pay a repro price hoping you were getting a great deal? I would hope that anyone on here if in doubt would pay a repro price if they liked it and wanted it, then be suprised if it turned out to be authentic IF they had any doubts about it. I'd rather play it safe than get burned, even though it looks to me like you are OK!
