It looks to me like ANOTHER fake Mobilgas Marine sign showing up on Ebay. Item number 140377899407. First off I think the "MARINE" font is too small, but if you know much about Mobil sheild signs, you would know that any solid border sign dated IR47 would be dated on the right side of the sign, NOT on the bottom in the middle. Besides the IR47 looks way too small and out of scale, let alone not even centered. The item has a bid and I feel sorry for the next person getting taken on one of these signs. Seems to be a lot of these MARINE and AIRCRAFT fakes showing up lately! I guess we all just have to be as knowledgeable as we can about what we collect.
Have a good one,
Darin

TWO THINGS DON'T LOOK RIGHT....

#1 THE MARINE LOOKS LIKE IT WAS ADDED AFTER AND TOO SMALL.

#2 THE WORD MARINE I BELIEVE WAS ORIGINALLY IN RED AND BIGGER.

NICE AGING PROCESS IF THAT'S THE CASE! OR PERHAPS IT'S JUST A PLAIN SHIELD WITH THE WORD MARINE ADDED? BUYER BEWARE!

...an Oldgasser had one of these for sale on eBay almost four years ago, and while I made some inquiries, I did not post here regarding my concerns...I was rather meek then wink and the seller was a purported Mobil authority...Jim was good enough to contact the seller, who insisted that the sign was authentic, possibly foreign...

...not too long after, someone started a thread about a seller at one of the shows having a good deal of items 'weathered' in the same manner...lo and behold - there's the same wretched, crude Mobil sign...

...RUN - do not walk, away from this sign...there are more red flags here than Chairman Mao's birthday party...Ingram Richardson would have burned down their factory before they put their mark on a sign this crappy...

...spread the word...the truth shall set you free (or at least keep some ill-informed sucker from getting ripped off)...

Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

1 hour left and the high bidder has over 1000 feedbacks! Too bad, I hate to see it when someone actually buys one of those without knowing it!

The word Marine is not parallel to the word Mobilgas.
It looks like the guy that got it really wanted it as he is the top two bidders....he got it.

Here is a pic of the sign
Can we get an original and do a side by side comparison?

I would have been taken on this sign too.
The Marine part would cause me to pause but the weathering & date would convince me.

Marine should be in large red letters. This sign is definately fishy.

I'll try to post a pic of an original tomorrow.
