The seller says it is "the real deal", that there is no outline of a "sticker" on the backside. Sure looks like the residue from an "Ande Rooney Co." or other manufacturer's paper label on the back of this sign, to me. I guess each potential buyer will have to decide for themselves.

That rust on the back kind of has a fake, chemical induced look to it. After all the Argentina signs, I'm very skeptical of fake looking rust and corrosion.

After conversing by email with the seller, I believe that they were sold a "pig in a poke". They were told the sign(s) were original. I personally believe they are a reproduction, that were "aged" to look old. I could be wrong, but I've seen a lot of Highway signs and have collected (we used to take them when I was younger and lets leave it at that. I grew more law abiding when I passed the mid-century mark a while ago) and sold more than a few of the signs. The sticker residue (what looks to me to be) is a "red flag" for me.

NOT SURE I SEE THIS SO-CALLED RESIDUE OF A STICKER YOU MENTION. I DO SEE A LARGE METAL PLATE ON THE BACK HELD DOWN TO THE SIGN WITH 5 RIVETS (OR OTHER) THAT YOU CAN CLEARLY SEE ON THE FRONT SIDE AS WELL. HAVEN'T SEEN ANY ANDE ROONEY REPOPS IN A LONG TIME, BUT THE ONLY ONE I DO REMEMBER WAS A SQUARE SIGN WITH THE SHIELD INSIDE THE BORDER. OTHER SIGN COMPANIES MADE DIE-CUTS BUT WERE ONLY ABOUT 12" IN SIZE. THEY DID NOT LOOK ANYTHING LIKE THIS EBAY "OUT OF PROPORTION" TRAIN WRECK. DON'T KNOW WHAT TO SAY OTHE THAN "STAY AWAY!"

Doc, you're right. When I pull out my "cheaters" and as I look closer it does look like a piece of metal pop-riveted to the back. Rooney signs were both square's and shields, even now on their site they show both. To my old blind eyes that "patch" looks to be close to if not the same size as this "sticker" on my Ande Rooney sign.

One thing I noticed on the sign, was that there is no wear or lack of wear where the sign would attach to a pole. You can clearly see the holes that would hold the sign, and all of the rust is consistent all the way across the back. Sign looks very fishy to me as well.

Guys, when I posted this thread, I was just informing everyone to stay away. I collect highway shields and the sign in question is 100% fake, no questions. The size and the shape of the shield are dead giveaways, and the lettering is also totally wrong. Forget the rust and all the other stuff you mentioned, this is a forgery. If put next to a real shield, there would be no doubt.

To the sellers credit, they posted the e-mail telling them it was fake and then pulled the auction.

Thanks for the continuing education Roger! I always appreciate these reproduction notices and use them to educate myself!

I think alot of the pickers out there buy this stuff truely believing they have original products to sell. An "original" illinios 66 would be north of 2 grand in price. It is good this was an honest seller, to bad they probably got hosed on buying it.

That's interesting. It looks like before you start paying big bucks for "original" route 66 signs you'd better know what your doing. Rusty and weathered looking means nothing.

Thanks for posting this. I've wanted either an Illinois Rt. 47, Rte. 66, or a Wisconsin US 45 for quite some time, but don't remember the originals well enough to take a chance. Now I think I'd have a good chance of not getting burned.
