I wanted to share something that has been bugging me. I seen in a post on "show news" a link that said "click the link to see my new stuff" which takes you to Cheese's site. Why can't we just post a picture instead of trying to lour someone to another web site? I belong to Big Cheese's site and check it also couple of times a week and post sometimes. I don't have a problem with Cheese's site because there is room on the world wide web for both sites. I just think trying to lour someone to another forum just like oldgas is morally wrong. That would be like me owning a restaurant and having someone come in and start handing out menus to another restaurant to my customers. I see links all the time for guys like me that have personal web sites but are more for showing there collection or selling which is great. Am I wrong for thinking this way?

No Jarvis, You are not wrong in thinking that! Jim has no problem with anyone having a link to another site in their post. There really was not a post, just the "lure". But that particular member has always asked for his own problems.

The 'Lure" part is why not post pics of whatever it is you are selling rather than a link (LURE) to another site. Really almost spam if you think about it.

Technically its not against the rules to post a link to another petro website (except in the showcase forum where links are prohibited). Disrespectful? In some cases yes, in some cases no.
There are several Shop Talk members that post links in their signature. While some members take offense to this it has always been allowed on this site.
What Jarvis is refferring to is different in that the primary goal appears to be to lure users to a different site. There is no real content on those posts, just a link to another site. The moderators have discussed this issue. Its great that Cheese and others have websites. I am not concerned whether any sites compete with Oldgas.com, but rather how posting a link in a post without any other real content affects THIS site.
The other issue is which forum those posts appear in. Items that are for sale belong in the For Sale Or Trade forum. Someone adding new items to their inventory is not "news".

Read what i wrote people!!!!

My website is a site that shows my collection with a few items for sale. NOT A FORUM OR FOR SALE ONLY SITE! 90% of everything on my site is either displaying my items or whats new to my collection.

Chad, I don't add my link to the showcase area because that's the rules!

I post links to Oldgas on Cheese's site, I don't see any complaining over there, Just another thing to fight about IMO.

Brian, I think it's great if guys are discussing something and send links from one site to another. But to just come on and only post a link for items for sale is a "lure" and wrong.

I am done on this topic... i said what i felt and i feel like some are just looking for a argument now.

Can you blame a guy for not wanting to put much time in posting when he gets attacked here no matter what he does?
If the info is already on that page why not use a link. I think it would be better if he linked to the globe-logos web site instead of another forum. That might appear unseemly to some.
You have two pages of shakers for sale. If someone came on here looking for shakers would you post the pictures and prices of each set or would you direct them to the site. Maybe you would post them all but I would just show the link. The info is already there.
Does belong in the For Sale or Trade section.

I'm not looking for an argument, as I probably click on the links more than others. I love any gas site that I can find, just seemed a little odd that the thread was started about adding links to posts(where ever they are) and the same post had a link at the end of it.
I have nothing against it, and I apoligize if I came off in a hostile way.

Dwaine Buck most bashed oldgas member in history. There is no other member that has received even 1/10th of the heat he has taken.

When cheeses site has its online swap meet I will post a link over here.

During my day I check both sites one after the other. One does not take away from the other for me.

Have a great day. Notice my link

The moderators have discussed this issue in the past. If we felt that this was a serious problem we would have acted on it.

We do want for sale topics to be in the For Sale form. The exceptions are a link in a signature or an offer to sell in response to an item wanted topic. Those are acceptable within reason in all forums except for Showcase.

I personally feel that by posting items for sale in the Petro News forum and then requiring viewers to click on a link just means fewer people will see the items than if they were posted with a picture in the For Sale forum.

Dwaine tends to do things differently than most people. For whatever reason, his actions sometimes upset other people. I try to remind myself, "If this were anyone else, would I or other people feel the same way?"

I appreciate the support and loyalty expressed by so many of you in so many ways. There is really no competitive thing going between Oldgas.com and Cheese's site as far as I'm concerned. The Oldgas.com Link Directory has a great deal of links to petro sites. That is part of the mission we have undertaken to network together the online community of collectors, vendors and others.

What the heck was that Dick? Did I miss something? I guess I'll have to review the topic.

I remember when I first met Dwaine at the 2004 Front Range Gas Bash. He was pushing this site BIG TIME. I told him I knew of the site but was not a member. I signed up that weekend (I'm sure some hate him for that too) before he posted this picture of the oldgasers at the meet.

Here is a link to the original post the pic came from. http://www.oldgas.com/shoptalk/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000299.html
He worked like hell to get us to stand still long enough to get this picture. Every time I saw him that weekend he was talking to someone about oldgas. Well he's pretty much been run off. Yea he can be a bit abrasive sometimes but he was a real supporter of this site. And yea TT I think you are #2. Wait until Dwaine is gone completely to see how much worse it will get for you. But I think you are hard like me! You won't get run off like some of the others. Does anyone remember a guy named Ron Bettin who used to post great show pictures and some nice signs in the BOTW?
So much for HAPPY FRIDAY!

It's ALL personal and you know that st.rod. All the regulars knew who we were talking about and that none of it has to do with what was actually posted but how others feel about that person. Me and Thunder differ on that but I don't hate him for it. I just dislike him a little bit!

I like to look at as many petro sites that I can.I like oldgas and I like cheeses site also.I read topics and like many have opinions also. The more material to read the better to me on these cold days.To me its simple,if you dont want to look at something on cheeses posts through his link you dont have to,you have a choice and if you dont like it then dont look, scroll on.I think that some people need to do the cooking and let their wives do the reading and posting on here.Everyone would get along better and have alot less negative opinions about people that in one way or another help our hobby. Thanks Jim and Cheese for everything you offer us!

I read both sites. What stands out to me most about internet message forums is that many problems could be avoided with good communication. If you have a problem with site content ask a moderator about it first. If it's not a problem with them then let it go. If you have a personal issue with someone, email them directly without broadcasting it first. Moderators are designated to handle problems. Some sites have good moderators, other sites not so much, I have seen it both ways. Bottom line let's just enjoy this great hobby, life is too short.
