IS THIS THE SAME KIND OF SIGN I SAW AT THE METRO-PETRO SHOW LAST SUNDAY? I KNOW I'VE SEEN THIS STYLE BEFORE...DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT A DATE BEING ON THE PLATE THOUGH.

The versions of this west coast drop leg version were not dated. As far as I'm aware they haven't been reproduced. I'm pretty sure these were used in the General Petroleum territory.
Have a good one,
Darin

I'm not up on these pump signs, so please bare with me. Isn't the Pegasus suppose to be outlined in black on the West Coast black bordered signs?

Also and again, I might be wrong. But isn't the size of this shield a little off? I thought the shields were a uniform 11"x12" sized. I don't have either an original nor a repop, so I'm not sure. Just going by whats in the Mobil guide. Trying to learn and reinforce what I thought I knew/know.

Thanks db! Either I've never seen one of these plates before, or just never noticed them. Thanks for the photo or yours.

I've never seen one of these solid black border shields with the horse outlined. I see what you're saying about the size though Bob as the book says 11X12, and this listing says 11-1/2 X 12? I don't know, but I'd still say it's the real deal.

The size was throwing me off.

Also, The guide reads:
11"x12" Black Border Shields
"Black outlined red flying horse with white detailing appears at top of sign".

If you're looking at page 66 of the book, I think that header in the lower right column is incorrect. It says White/BLUE border shields, yet all of the listings have black borders. Something there isn't right. Me personally, I've never seen a white outline pump plate with black borders and lettering. They have all been blue and made by Ingram-Richardson Co. from 1954-62. Maybe Pegasus, Richard Weir can confirm if they do exist, a thin line white and black border version. Sorry to kind of deviate from your original post Sodamamak, but I'm curious about the thin line black border plate's existance!

First - NO shield pump plates before 1946.
There are basically three designs available and also three sizes of the Mobil pump plates.

West coast (General) black border with no outlining of the pegasus and also sharper "hooks" on the lower parts than the other designs. Same size of Pegasus on both Mobilgas ans Mobilgas special. Only the "closed" a. Diesel version has "DIESEL" in black!

Ingram Richardson shields with blue border 1946-52, outlining on the Pegasus' I.R.46 (year of mfg) in the lower right corner. New design with thin blue and thin outer white edge from 1953-62. I.R.53 (and upwords) at the lowest peak of the sign. Only closed a.

Shields with very thin blue and a wider white edge from the Magnolia territories. Outlined Pegasus both open and closed a's (open propably oldest, around 46-48) MC-AX or McMath Axilrod at the lowest peak of the sign.
Also a pretty rare version with "Metro" in green with thin green and a little wider white edge. Magnolia shields are just a little higher than the other two designs.

I have been collecting Mobil for ten years and really tried to penetrate this area as I was a bit confused about all the different versions in the beginning. One could write a mile about all the different plates but the above describes the basics. Being a "foreigner", I may need some "local" back up ;-) ...maybe if you could chime in Richard, and correct me if I'm wrong.

Anyway, to the best of my knowledge,
Claes

Mobil pump plates MC-AX or McMAth Axilrod (Magnolia) 1946-62 both types of "a".

I think Claes summed it up nicely. The sign in the original picture is definitely an original, and Darren is correct......I've never seen a "west coast" shield with the Pegasus outlined, nor with anything but a solid black border. However, if someone out there has one with a black border and a white "edge", I'd certainly be interested in taking it off your hands!!!

Richard
