I picked up a small Shell porcelain sign a few years ago on line. The seller said it was real and it had been repainted. It has been repainted, with all the repops out there I am wondering is it "real or Memorex"? lol The size is 12"x12".

I wonder about the outline in the second photo, is it where a sticker once was?

I paid less than $25 for this sign, so if it is a repop I didn't get burned too bad, LOL.

I don't deal with signs, so please let me know what you guys (and gals) think.

Thanks! grin

Doc, you're right. Repainted is probably the wrong term. The sign has been "touched up" in places, that may be a more precise and correct terminology. grin

Do you have a opinion on it's originality?

Those shell pump plates are very tough to tell if they are original or reproduction.

I know the repop signs do not have the split grommets.

DB is correct,a common repop--original Shell pump plates also have 4 grommets. If you like it the price was right.

Like I said, I'm not a sign guy. What jumps out at you to let you know it's a repop? Any help with telling an original vs a repop will be great appreciated. This sign wasn't expensive, but the next might be. Thanks.

The white back is a good way to tell it's re-popped....

White back, only 3 grommets-if original it would easily bring $1000.00 to $2500.00-I have sold Super Shell pump plates for the high number.Condition is everything.

Also the original will say "made in usa" directly at the bottom.I also do not think a Shell pump plate was made in yellow. The only ones that i have had and have are red.
