Hi All,

Just bought this can yesterday because I've never seen anything like it. Wondering if anyone else has ever seen one before, how rare it is, and possible value? I paid $43.00 bucks for it... All the joints appear to be hand soldered and the only research I can find on the company is 1 of their 2 Chicago factories burned down in 1894. I stopped by an old timer's house with it yesterday (Over 50 years collecting) and he said he'd never seen anything like it before. He also said he thinks it might be for lamp oil, but it says for Oil & Gasoline right on the label.

I've not seen one exactly like yours either, however my instinct is like that of your collector friend. Probably used for filling lamps or other small items. The label is advertising for the can, not what it held. Gasoline and Oil were items the can could be used for.
Happy Collecting.

In the early days oil & tar seeps were refined for use in lamps because of the rising cost of whale oil for lamps/stoves.
You have an early container for transporting/storage of Gas or Oil used in lamps & stoves.
