What do you guys think is the most sought after gas company ites are? Sinclair? Texaco? Other? To the expert it is probably one thing, to the laymen probaly another. Being new to the hobby and certainly a newbie, I like to Polly, Gulf stuff. Simply because I dig the colors.

That one is going to be a tough one to answer. At the risk of being completely shot down,I think many of us tend to collect certain things such as pump plates, globes, cans or whatever we like rather than concentrating on a single company. On the other hand, many also collect mainly items from a preffered company or items from their geographical area.

In my case,Texaco is the only brand that I have assembled a sizable collection around.I did that because they made so many interesting things to build a coordinated with.I also go after things with a New Mexico connection such as the red oval Humble pump plate.

Just my thoughts. It will be interesting to see what the other guys think.

Most sought after? Probably any company that used pictures on their logos. Gilmore, Signal, polly, Fyredrop, Husky...ect.

Texaco, mobil, gulf are the big 3.... Followed up by Sinclair, shell, pennzoil, Phillips!!! I would think these companies are collected more than the more obscure smaller companies. Collections are easier to put together when there is more material on the market. I would agree that companies with great graffics are more sought after, but would certainly find less collections featuring them.

By specializing in one or a few companies, the rare premium items will be harder to find & more costly.

I started with Texaco becasue they have a wide variety of items. But, I have also picked up some obscure things (Montana Items) as well. I also look for "bargins" that I can sell and augment my Texaco collection. People that just collect cans, or salt & pepper shakers....that's cool too.

I ask because I got my first pump a few weeks back. A Bowser 585-c that was once a Phillips 66 pump. I am going to re-do it in Phillips 66 I guess. But honestly I'm not sure why. I'm not really nuts about the Phillips 66 colors. When one is looking to restore a pump I just wondered what people were thinking when they made their choice. For example, I could paint it orange and black, slap some HD stickers on it and sell it for more than any gas company I choose. I'm sure that statement is 100% true but you guys know what I mean… I wonder what "brand" is the most sought after to the laymen and the true enthusiast. I think there is some truth in the post about companies that used an animal such as Polly, Gilmore. I mean hell I'm a laymen and those are the ones I like. smile

As far as selling, the more Rare the pump the faster it will sell regardless of what company it is restored to. For a quick sell, paint it red & use magnetic decals [so it can be changed quickly from Texaco to Mobil or what ever buyer wants it to be].

Your largest Profit will be to Gut & Flip it unrestored.
You'll be lucky to make $10hr by the time your done restoring & selling it.

also lots of people will buy something they recognize from younger days.since texaco, mobil ,sinclair ,shell had so many stations across the country, they tend to be recognized by more people.was at an auction a few weeks ago and more people were ooohing and ahhing at a sinclair dino on capco than were looking at the gill glass body globe that was right next to it.needless to say the dino went for like 285-95 and thats alot of dough for that globe.

If you are going to paint the pump for resale, I wouldnt waste your time. Restored pumps are very hard to sell. If you paint it in Phillips 66, your buyer would be like "if it was in Sinclair I would take it". It is very tough to restore pumps and turn a profit. Im not saying it cant be done, but very few are successful at it.

There is a difference between "most collected" and "most collectable"

Hands down..because of availability.."most collected" is a no brainer..Shell..Texaco...Mobil..Sinclair.

"Most collectable"..to me that implies value. Something more rare and sought after. ie..Gilmore, Signal etc...

Ryan and Dick are right on the money...in my opinion. A few years back there was a guy around here that restored pumps and sold them. He and I bought a set of pumps at an auctin and paid the same price. He restored his to sell and I sold mine as unrestored. I netted $350 and he netted $500. He put much more effort into his than I did mine. i t hink there are guys on here who have done well restoring pumps and selling them. But, look on ebay and see what sells better....restored or unrestored.

Being that it is your 1st pump, restore it for YOUR SELF. That way you will know what it takes [material & Labor].

Here is one idea. Go to Ebay, in the search type Texaco, see how many individual auctions come up, then do Mobil, etc. At least this will give you an idea of how many people are trying to sell something from that oil company.
