Cans range in price from $5-$25 for the common cans, and the more graphic and Rare a Can is the can see prices well over a $1000 for a Desirable Rare Graphic quart oil can. When buying cans condition is everything, you are better of building a Small collection of cans that are in real nice shape as these cans will hold there value and appreciate in value more than a rough can. A $5-$25 can will allways be just that as the better Higher dollar rare cans have a much better chance at going up in Value. And definately pick up a copy of Tom Allens book, lots of great Pictures of oil cans.. Here is a Great Thread here from Oldgas showing a bunch of Rare Graphic cans. http://www.oldgas.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=130202#Post130202

Alex, there is no certain way one has to collect.
Jason(Esse's Garage) is correct, IMO, that if you can afford "higher end" cans buy them. They seem to hold their value and in most cases actually increase in value.
If you can't afford a can in "Very Good to Excellent" condition, then look for cans in good condition or if rare, in fair condition. This way you have a can for your enjoyment and display purposes. As you are able you may find that you can "upgrade" to a better conditioned can, sell the original and recoup some of the cost of upgrading.
Dick, does make great looking cans! I have some that I know I will never "find in the wild" or if I did find one would never be able to afford the "asking price" let alone the final price at auction.
Ebay is a "strange animal" at times. I had been looking for an early Veedol "black/orange/creme" colored quart can. I had lost 6 or 7 auctions it seemed and lost them badly. I was able to win one of the cans last week for less than 1/2 of my past losing bids. So one never knows what will happen during an auction.

I am a gas pump collector also, but started buying a can now and then. I buy stuff I like the colors of. Most of them are worn, but I like the old look. I am not buying for an investment. Here is my small collection. Uploaded with ImageShack.usUploaded with ImageShack.us
