Well I just came across a very tough to find DSP sign. I got it at a great price because one of the corners is missing. It's about a 2" section that rusted off the corner. I have seen miracles with sign restoration, just wondering who's the best guy to talk to.

I've seen sign "restorations" from a couple of different suppliers, and have not been impressed at all. Now, if it's just fixing some chips it's one thing, but I'm talking about mmore extensive work. They're shiny, smooth and colorful. However, if you compare the ones I've seen to originals (or to the unrestored side), things like fonts and shapes are totally different! This tells me that in many "restorations", the entire side of the sign is repainted. At that point, why not just find a new piece of sheet metal, too?

Perhaps there are people that have had good luck with having signs restored, or perhaps I'm looking too closely. All I'm saying is that I've never seen a "restoration" that would satisfy me personally.

To tell you the truth I kind of agree with you in some ways. Thats why I promised myself to just take care of the missing corner and blend it in. I dont want any of the rest of the sign touched.

If you have been watching any of the auctions recently, its does not pay to restore any of the signs. It appears to actually reduce the value.

I think it depends on what you intend to do with the sign.If you want to sell it,I wouldn't touch it.On the other hand,if you plan on keeping it in your own collection I have no problem with a quality restoration,to a limited extent,to improve displayability.

I had it done to a Texaco Marine White pump plate that was about a 6.5 or 7 and now displays like a 10.I did it because most of the other plates in that layout are 9.5 or better and I didn't think a 7(?)would fit in.I don't plan on selling it anytime soon so I'm happy with the result.

That is the only sign I have ever had restored, but in this case it worked out for me.As we say,to each his own.

Try LeBaron sign service---lebaronsignservice.com or lebaron49@gmail.com
I was impressed with some work that I saw that he had done.

I think it may be worth having it done, what do you think. I'm keeping her for sure...and don't have anything else in the room this damaged.

save your money, It will cost you much more than that sign will ever be worth. There is a guy here in MA that does a good job, but again at a minimum it will cost $400/per side

IMO, it looks better now than it ever would restored. But, I share Wes' opinion (above) on restored signs. I'd rather have a rough original than a restored sign.

I 'am with Tare i would rather have a rough original than a restored sign any day.

Many restored signs to me look like unmarked repops.

This one bothers me a little bit. That is why I pulled it back up.Why is it that several are perfectly willing to over restore gas pumps, bulk dispensres, air meters, water cans, towel boxes and just about anything else but hesitate to restore a sign to match the quality of their other restorations?

I have no intention of starting an argument,I WON'T DO THAT,but I'm curious as to the reasoning.I ask the question more for the benefit of newcomers to our forum than for those of us who have already made a decision.

Thank you for your thoughts.

Restored pumps dont bring the money they should. Restored globes dont bring the money they should. Why should signs?

I would take a good original pump over a restored one any day.

I agree with you OLD IRON,,, we restore everything else but it's a big deal when we restore a sign. People even restore, $200K Corvettes, Auburns,Dusenburg's,, double Bowsers gas pumps worth thousands.. Everything has a value to it,,EVEN restored signs,, I've done a few and had Rick Neault and his father Jerry ( LeBaron Sign Restorations, Elkridge Maryland) do them, they do extremely excellent work.. there is a place for everything . The original question was who is the best guy to talk too.. My answer is above. JMO,,,

Eric....I think you'll find this sign is not all that hard to find in much better condition than yours. They're fairly common and you should be able to find a nice one for $500+/-. I see them at just about every oil & gas show, plus often on eBay. To replace the corner and repair both sides would cost quite a bit more than $500 I'd think.
