Anyone know of any pictures of car washes at gas stations back in the 50's and 60's? Always thought it would be interesting to see how different they were from what they have today.

Back in the 20s and 30 washing cars was a big thing. Stations had "AUTO LAUNDRY."

Believe it or not, this picture was taken about 2 weeks ago. It is an old station in the city of St. Louis that never took down this sign, and it is actually not a sign, it is engraved into the building.

Just about every pump company offered car washers, below is a copy of the Wayne shown on my website. They were also offered by many other companies (Manley, etc. I have a ads showing them if you are interested).

http://www.petrolianacollectibles.com/wayne%20car%20washer.htm

By the 50s & 60 stations were too busy repairing cars, that washing them became secondary, most cars were washed outside, equipment was a hose, bucket and a wrag.

By the late 70s and into the 80s, stations became convenience stores, with a car wash (NO TOUCH) outside, just like we have today.

These are some neat pictures. I really like the older machinery. They are really neat looking. The auto wash bowl is also interesting.

Here's a couple pics of a 1955 car wash (I guess) sign I own. Not sure exactly where it came from. I've been tempted to restore it but I like the look of the original patina. I made a bracket and hung it on the side of my house for a couple of years till my neighbors started looking at me cross eyed and I took it down.

Thats a neat sign. Anyone have any pictures of some automatic car washes from around the 70's or 80's? I remember some that used to have some brushes mounted side ways that were there to clean your windows or something. Only a few of those left when I was younger but I do remember seeing them before.
