Back in the 20s and 30 washing cars was a big thing. Stations had "AUTO LAUNDRY."
Believe it or not, this picture was taken about 2 weeks ago. It is an old station in the city of St. Louis that never took down this sign, and it is actually not a sign, it is engraved into the building.
Just about every pump company offered car washers, below is a copy of the Wayne shown on my website. They were also offered by many other companies (Manley, etc. I have a ads showing them if you are interested).
http://www.petrolianacollectibles.com/wayne%20car%20washer.htmBy the 50s & 60 stations were too busy repairing cars, that washing them became secondary, most cars were washed outside, equipment was a hose, bucket and a wrag.
By the late 70s and into the 80s, stations became convenience stores, with a car wash (NO TOUCH) outside, just like we have today.
