We found an old gas pump handle imprinted with the name "Hayes" near the nozzle and the fitting for the hose. The handle to pump the gas is at the top instead of at the bottom like the ones today. That is about the only deescription we can give. Any information about this would be appreciated.

These were not called a handle, they were referred to as a nozzle. Someone started calling them handles and now a lot of people on ebay are using that name. You probably have a nozzle made by Moore and Kling of Boston, Mass. They sold two different ones, the Type A, which had a round handle on the top of the nozzle, and the Type B, that had a straight, open handle on the top of the nozzle. Companies such as Hayes did not make their own nozzles, they had companies make them for them and had their name put on them. The two mentioned above have the patent number 1,722,985.
