I enlarged it, and it just gets fuzzy. There's just not enough information there to read a date. Where did the 1989 date comment come from? It looks like a real sign to me.

Please refer to page 13 of Oil Company Signs,A Collectors Guide published by Scott and Wayne, regarding known reproductions:

RED CROWN STANDARD OF INDIANA
porcelain
30",42" and possibly 48"

Just something to think about. That has already been published.

Sorry I forgot the pictures from another post he made.
He offered the sign to us and we turned it down. He says he has owned it since 1975.

Do you nthink thats the date of manufacture or is that just a production code? I have seenthat same type of late model notation on other Standard Oil signs that I was pretty sure were original and always assummed it was a production code used by the manufacturer??
Any Standard Oil sign expert that can answer that for me? I'm really curious now??

I noticed that the Proxibid sign also has some writing at the bottom in the blue band. Maybe they're both fakes ?

I had one of these signs in my collection years ago and as far as I recall there wasn't any writing at the bottom.

Current owners of these signs please inform us.

There was one exactly like that one hanging on a barn on a farm near me. It had that exact marking and was definitly the real deal. Was on the barn before 1989. The station owner in the nearby town saved the sign and gave it to the daughter when the station was sold. They nailed it to the barn...up high. It was not for sale for any price. Someone even tried to steal it once I guess. I walked over and looked at it nearly every time I attended their gargage sales. The son has it now I believe.

I think it is real. I have a John Deere sign made by veribrite and the code on the bottom of it is written in the same font as on that Red Crown.

it's real...I have two like it. Bought the mint one from a friend of mine that had owned it since 1981. the second one is a barn hanger that I got at Iowa gas five years ago...it's on the side of my barn....1989 was a factory code.
OBTW I have seen mint ones go for almost what he is asking for.

THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I WAS THINKING...JUST WANTED SOMEONE ELSE TO CONFIRM IT. I DOUBT A REPRO MADE IN 1989 AND DATED WOULD HAVE THAT STYLE FONT. PLUS IT SAYS "AD 1989" LIKE IT'S THE CODE FOR THAT PARTICULAR SIGN.

...geez, guys - really?...three pages?...y'all need to get away from the computer screen and go to some shows, talk to some people...that thing's as original as the day is long...and that sign is worth it...

...$135 for shipping?...not the most ridiculous quote I've ever seen, for shipping a large sign...

I see he removed it from Ebay??
The one at the Matthews auction on the 6th of this month brought $2,000 in super condition. I don't remember the date on it.
Maybe someone local snapped it up? No shipping.
Thanks for the input.
