I've been offered what I believe is a Gilbarco 176, mid-1920's 10 gallon visible pump. About how tall are these pumps? Just needing to make sure I grab the right trailer to go get it! Any advice on how to load it properly for travel? Should I stand it up, lay it down with supports on the body to keep any stresses off the glass? The glass is perfect in it, and I'd hate to break it bringing it home. Thanks in advance!

I use a 2' X 6' sheet of 3/4" plywood and an old tire. I lean the plywood at about a 45 degree angle on the tailgate of the pickup. lay the pump on the plywood with the tire resting on the collar of the pump. This keeps all the presure off the glass. Then two people lift the pylwood up and slid the pump in. Richard

Im with Richard on using the bed of a pickup. I have seen trailers beat the heck out of pumps. Not to say a trailer isn't a good way to haul em, but in my opinion truck beds are the safer bet. I have always had good luck using an old bed mattress to set the pump on and slide 'er on into the truck bed. Helps if you have a bedliner too as it slides easier... Hope that helps some. -Paul

I'm not sure how a 9ft pump would fit into the bed of my truck...hmmm....might take some creative loading!

I never thought of the old mattress idea, that sounds like it would be great for this pump, to keep it from getting all beat up.

Any and all advice helps, as I've never done this before and I'm willing to learn from others experiences / mistakes.

Tailgate down even in a small pickup, no problem. I used an S-10 & hauled 3 visibles from Grants Pass Oregon to SoCal. No tires or mattress.

I brought a T-176 home in an old Datsun pick-up about 25 years ago.

Cant recall how we braced/cushioned it, but the glass came thru OK.

I put a American 10 gallon in a shot bed S-10 with no problem. It was my first pump, so on second thought it probably wasn't a good ideal! LOL... It was the early days of my addiction.

I have hauled visibles in my Explorer Sport Trac. 4 foot bed plus 2 feet on the tailgate and the other 2 feet plus hanging out the back. I was surprised it worked real well.
