I bought my first pump and discovered this great site to help with the restoration. The pump is a Neptune 855 S.N. 59582. I want to restore it using a brand name that would have used this pump and the proper year for the style of advertising. The publications I have checked only show a Red Seal brand. Any information on the pump and availability of seals and glass would be helpful. Thanks.

Welcome to Oldgas. You couldn't find a better place for help. I can tell you it dates to as early as 1939. Jack Simms Book on pumps shows 2 versions. As far as which brand, I wouldn't sweat that part. Pick your brand, it's your pump. The Guide to gaspump restoration has an entire section on brands, proper looks and colors, globes, signs, decals, and even color codes. It's a nice pump you have. Place an add in the "want" forum and check with some of the parts suppliers provided around this site. Good luck and post some pics.

Welcome to the site. As Dave said, you can do it in any brand/color you want and it doesn't really effect the value at all. Most pumps were not made for a specific brand and the stations would repaint them if they switched brands. If you just like having it historically "period correct" thats cool. The book is a good source and I am sure others will pipe in with their knowledge. John

Welcome! There is a wealth of info on here. You mention red seal, that pertains to the pump and not an oil/gas company. You can get very creative with this pumps when it comes to colors. The ribbed sides make for some nice accents. You won't hurt the value if you pick an oil company you like and spice up the paint job. It's totally up to what you want. A word of advice when restoring your pump...be careful with the nozzle receiver assembly, it's fragile and very difficult to find a good one. Tom.

Before Neptune went into the pump business they were famous for making the Red Seal pump. It was used commercially for oil pipe lines, oil depots, bulk plants and on the back of gasoline tankers.
BTW, my name is Jack Sim, not Simms, although both families go back to the Fraser clan from the Highlands of Scotland.

Welcome, If you are interested, go to our web site www.severngaspumps.com....click 1940's pumps and you'll see a Neptune that we restored in Indian Gasoline? They are beautiful pumps. Very stylish and engineered well. We have a Smithway L3 shown under the Currently Available and for Sale page too. It is done in Skychief. Although a smaller version with a different door system, it still used the fluted sides and recessed globe holder in the top. Good Luck, Paul www.severngaspumps.com

Yes, they are a very nice pump, I have done a couple. Like Tom said, be very careful with the nozzle receiver when dis-assembling.
Thanks, Phil _________________________________________________ Looking for any old pumps, or nice 5 gallon cans.
