It's big... 4 to 5 feet tall and almost as wide. It's double sided and has the flanges (sp?) but they are bent. Any advice on bending them back out straight without hurting them & any advice on how to treat the rust so it doesn't spread? This thing was in the ground (clay) since at least 1968.

I would not recommend bending it back you are likeky to break apart the porcelain, as far as cleaning something as simple as bar kerpers helper and some elbow grease.

Thank you so much Lucky's... I want to make sure I don't mess up the sign or the value, and I want to make sure it doesn't rust faster now that it's not encased in the ground. You wouldn't believe how hard the red clay of Oklahoma had become around the sign, it took me hours and hours to get it out. It has a couple of areas where the rust is pretty thick... and one of the edges that are bent down is almost completely rust.

Standard Oil Company of New York (SOCONY) and Vacuum Oil Company merged in 1931. That design was used from the time of the merger until 1946 so the 1935 date of manufacture is right. The porcelain is already toast where the ears are bent. I'd bend them back. Use a big pair of channel locks and don't worry about getting the ears perfectly flat. In that condition it's what we refer to as a barn hanger.

It has a lot of sentimental value, so I don't plan on selling it. My cousins and I used to play/slide on it all the time when we were little. Although, it does look a lot better in person than in the pics.
