Can someone tell me what brand name paint I would use to paint a repro Crown globe, I would also need the color code for all the Crown colors, blue, red, gold , purple, and are there any tips on how to mask it of , is tape better, or should I use a liquid mask, and is it better to brush it or spray. thanks Chris

Chris, Good question... I have a friend that painted a repo crown red and after a few years and weather the paint is coming off and now from the road it looks like an original. I think he etched the glass but can't remember. I wouldn't mind knowing the answer myself.

Looking for anything from Hoosier Pete, Platolene 500 and Red Bird.

At a good craft store you can buy Glass Etching Paste [brush on]. I use tape to mask
[comes off faster], I also use a light inside so as not to get the spray paint to thick.

Two things:
In case someone doesn't understand what Dick said about etching paste. Paint won't stick to glass unless the glass is etched. If you find a white crown and the surface is a little rough, it was probably a red or blue crown with the paint removed.
Second, Scott Anderson once told me that he used a rubber compound, covered the globe and cut away the rubber on the parts that were to be painted. This would naturally be after the glass is etched. I never tried it, manybe someone out there has, and it would be of interest to find out if this works.

Jack, I have used a liquid mask, which is nothing more than fast drying rubber, it brushes on like thick paint, I have never used this liquid mask on glass but I don't see why it won't work .I beleve this is the same stuff that scott is referring to

The first time I used 3 coats of latex simi gloss paint as a mask, then cut out what I wanted to spray, cut along the masking before removing. 2nd time I used masking tape, and pulled it away from painted area, before paint had time to dry.

The latex paint sounds like the way to go. was the latex easy to remove from the etched glass

I used the etching paste after cutting out the area I wanted to spray. CLEAN WELL before spraying.
By using mulitable layers of latex, it came off almost in one piece. DO NOT USE FLAT LATEX, either simi or high gloss latex.
