What is the value and age of this sign? I found it pictured in the "Oil Company Sign" book but no other info.
I work with the guy who found it in an old house he bought and demolished across the street from his station.

Jim Daniel sold a raised right hand version, 36 " high, 11 " wide, at auction recently for $15,400 (with 10% penalty inc.). It was one of four found N.O.S in the shipping crate in the Northeast.

There's that auction mentality, " gee, I saw one sell for xxx and so they all must be worth that" High prices at auctions are the exception generaly. Of course I may be talking to people with 2,000,000.00 Mopars. Beware of auction pricing. If anyone wants to give me $10,000 for a near mint tin litho Hood tire sign I'm ready to sell, one sold for 20k last year at an auction so mine must be worth that, right????????

Neil, I agree, auctions are not the final say so on value. I was just reporting a recent sale. The Hood sign in Daniels auction was porcelain. Ed

thanks minuteman, I think I'll wait for someone with the 10k to ask. My point was that here's someone who asks what a sign is worth, not what a record price is. Now you have someone who won't sell their sign because they think that 15k is what it's worth. What good is that? Auctions are driven by egos and also attract deep pocket bidders so prices can (not always) reach levels that are not realistic for someone who wants to sell their item.

Thanks for all the posts and emails. I introduced the owner to this site. He will take a better picture and it will be posted in the For Sale section with his contact info.
