anyone know of a website where you can get historical data by city or state? Was curious when gas was last 37.9 per gallon in WI. That's what my computer reads currently.

TIA
Chuck

Just call your local libuary. Ask them what you want to know, and they will look it up for you. I do this all the time when setting up a new pump for someone.

I have a file of gas prices by month and by area, for a ton of years. First I have to find it, then I will post what you need.

California has always been "higher" than the midwest. I bet my answer for WI (or Green Bay) will be around 1970. I was a little young to remember that, though

Chuck:

Here in Michigan, we had 'gas wars' in the early 1970's. I remember buying gas in Grand Rapids for 24.9 cents when I was 16.

Of course, a couple of years later we had the OPEC oil embargo and the price shot up.

Later . . .

Jim

I quit the gas business in 1970 and it was selling for 34.9 reg. and 36.9 premium, I think. This was 100 miles north of you, and our gas was tankered in from GB. I'm thinking your price came about 1972 and Mr. Nixon at the same time.

According to Super Service Station Magazine, gas prices in Madison, Wisconsin were:
Aug, 1959: Super Prem 40; Prem 37.1; Reg 30.9
Sep, 1962: Prem 37.9; Reg 33.9
Jun, 1963: Prem 37.9; Reg 33.9
These follow through the late 60's and I have no records after that.
In 1972 I owned a Shell Station here in the St. Louis area, when I opened the station the price of Prem was 44.9, but within a month we had a gas war and the price of Reg dropped to 29.9 at the discounters.
