Hummm...that asking the same question thing might just happen in the future, though I will try very hard not to. It's 'cause of that getting older thing--you know, the memory starts to go.
And yes I am in Southern MD, but I am not a collector (yet! so I've been told). I'm an artist who started with questions for a painting (still working on it) and stayed (much to the amusement of my husband) because of all the awesome visuals, plus I like to see things that are well engineered. I also love learning about new things.
I see petroliana everywhere and it all this groups fault!

My husband is a collector--of Cacti and other unusual succulents. We have a year-round cacti garden of about 40 X 40 feet, plus 5 hundred more stuff in pots outside, plus this time of year, plants are cramming our south windows and three 8x6x4 cold frames I built for him with heaters in them for all the rest of the frost tender plants. One of his older plants is a 1 foot, 25 year old sagurao he grew from seed. We spent our honeymoon in Big Bend Park in Texas for our honeymoon, looking for and photographing some unusual cacti.
He just thinks I should be more interested in plants (the careers we both had) or why not an art forum. This area is just a suprise--not because I am a woman, I used to drive a lot of farm equipment in my early days and loved it--and also worked as carpenters assitant for 4 years in my 20's. It's just something he never expected I would be drawn to.
Anything I see really cool on the forums, I holler to him to come look! If nothing else, I think he will be the supporting spouse. I've had to pull a lot of spines (especially those ones that are small like fiberglass that seem to come from nowhere) out of my skin over the 22 years we've been married, so he definately will be supportive!

OMG jkyocom!
That is beautiful!!! Why are you all hiding them in gas pumps!
Seriously...That is something I would have on my mantle, if I had a mantle. Especially if everything worked and could be made to move like an automaticon (sp?).
When I was a kid, I loved those displays at the Smithsonian that when you pushed a button had gears moving around doing things.
And before anyone offers one, I probably can't afford it.

Another stupid question...would it have been manually operated, or was it introduced in cities where they might have had electicity. I ask because of the date.

VR was turned by a measuring mech. that measured the amount, made no difference whether the pump was electric, air or hand operated.

Computers were only used in electric pumps .....till the power failed....then it had to have hand crank option to operate,
My avatar is a clock unit I re-invented to replace missing clock units. That type can be acuated by hand. They count, chime and reset....made from computer parts
I will be releasing an Identification CD for the Veeder Roots this week if all goes well....lots of pics Some are already in the hands of oldgassers
