As a novice in this hobby I have a lot more to learn about this area of collecting. As a young collector I am amazed at the childish comments that go back and forth between members and actions taken by other member to offend someone or limit their collecting ability. We are all here for the same reason- to help, share knowledge, and show our collections. I feel it is totally unnecessary to make someone feel “Not Welcome” to our site. This is a community-there will be people you do not like-Just Keep it to yourself. I am not directing this towards any members. This is just a general conclusion I have come to. A lot of people in life have looked down on me because of my age (23), Later on to realize that I can run rings around them in certain areas. Everyone has something they are good at-whether it be a trade, a hobby, ect. I always do my best to respect everyone on this site and I hope we can all do the same. Try to welcome the new members- because you were a “newbie” at one time also. I think as a community we have gotten better in the new member area-but we still have a long way to go. I have had people make wise comments to me on this site. I just ignore the comments instead of adding fuel to the fire. I have met some great people from this site which has made my enjoyment for this hobby grow. I like this hobby for every aspect- buying, selling, and discussion of various topics. I hope all members take this into consideration so we can all enjoy this hobby in a comfortable environment.

It has more to do with the internet than anything else. Most of the things people say "behind the safety of their keyboard" they would not have the guts to say to somebody face to face.
I think in general most members on Oldgas are pretty good. Try going onto a larger forum (race car, or boat forum for example) if you want to see mean. Some of the car forums I go to have hundreds of thousands of members.
FREEDOM oil items wanted.

If there is someone like you described, you can always report them to the admins who run the site. I blog on other sites and I've seen guys banned. It's worth a shot.

The old saying is so true...." If you can't say something nice, say nothing at all." I try to live by this logic.... Oh, by the way, I'd like to say Hi to Mike & son, you know who you are...Paul www.severngaspumps.com

Also remeber that e-mail or web chats do not have the all aspects or efficiency of the communication process that you would receive in face to face conversation. I hate e-mail for this fact. Too often I send an e-mail asking questions about something only to have someone come into my office with their feathers ruffled. After I ask my question in person and discuss it they leave with a lot cooler emotioanl level. At lease as far as I know. Communications are a two way thing just because it is sent one way doesn't mean that is how it is received. So conversely how it was received may not be how it was intended. If you don't know ask. Gotta go I've spent too much time typing what I could have said in person in 30 seconds.

You will run accross this everywhere that you go at that age. Online, auctions, antique stores, flea markets, ect. There are a lot of keyboard toughguys out there. As for what your future holds, it is something that I went through and survived. It comes with the territory from my past travels and trips. I was in antique stores at the age of 16 and you would not believe the dirty looks that I would get. The second guessing by the shop owners and workers was expected every time I stepped foot in a store. I was stopped on occasion just so they could put thier feelers out to see what my motive was. I'm 31 now and I still get those "looks" from time to time. On the other hand, 75% of those looks that I got so many years ago have now turned into a joyful greeting. There is a large gap between yourself and the majority of the collectors in this field. There are still people out there that are in this gap, like myself, but they are less abundent than the ones that are 20 years-plus of my senior. I can assure you things will turn out fine and as far as the online thing goes, don't lose any sleep over it.

Every member should be entitled to give their opinions here. If one doesn't like the opinion given, pass it by.
In my opinion, new members aren't entitled to anything just because they are new. The same is true with experienced collectors.
I have reached out to new members and experienced members. I like to think we have started friendships both online and in person.
In other instances, when reaching out to new and experienced members. They have been insulting, rude and even suspicious of me. That's life.
We are all people and we are all different. None of us, have the exact same life experiences or collecting histories.
As someone who has collected for a long time. I at times, shake my head when I read new collectors giving values.
I realize that times are changing rapidly. But on more than one occasion I have read here where a collector who has weeks, possibly months of collecting experience will argue values with collectors who have decades of years collecting.
Or the new collector will ask for value on their items. Be given said values honestly and then price their items here above the given values. When the item(s) don't sell or they have to lower the price, lash out at the membership for not helping the new collector.
I have stated this before, I started collecting in 1965. I knew a few others who started collecting before I did. One of those was my father. I learned from him that values are subjective. They depend on if a person was/is emotionally involved with the item, if the person is a potential buyer or if the person is the seller.
I also learned from him and in the military, one has to earn respect... It is not to be given lightly and should not be abused. (I am still working on that last thought as at times because of things I have said, I have abused any respect I have gathered)

As another young new member here, (27) I agree, you will get these internet tough guys on any forum. Best to just ignore it, I have found they are never like that in real life.
I want to thank the members here, as I have learned soo much. I have been in the sign collecting hobby for 4-5 years, but mainly general advertising, not oil/gas, and I had no interest in oil cans until I came here. I still feel like I know nothing about cans and globes, but I also feel like I know ALOT more than I did before I came here.
Thanks to the old farts who put up with us newbies, your advice and input is very helpful!

I must be missing something, this is a good group of people! I had jump in and take back another forum from some "cyber punks" It takes new people to keep alive and grow a forum or any group. So don't take it personally when you find a Mae West or Roman for 50$ and I say "I hate you" I'm just green with envy or.... some type of fungus????? Take care! tt

In all actuality, this is the BEST forum, I've EVER been on. I've seen other forums where they openly discuss their dislikes of people. They often resort to name calling and such.
Like Ryan said, try some other forums. There are some I just dont contribute to any more, because of the attitudes there.
This place is like family here, and like a family, we often spat with each other. On a recent thread about e-bay, I pretty much told a member here to "Quit his whining, and pay the price"...
He got even with me though... He sold me a $100.00 part for my bike, for $20.00, and refused to take any more for it!!!!
Besides, its young collectors like you, who will determine the future of this hobby. Lets hope that its you, that host some huge "Gas Bash" in the future....
Anything Chevron I'd rather be flying.....

probably everyone on here has given and/or received a jab or two? when i ask a question or look for advice, the last thing I want, especially from an experienced collector, is a sugar coated responce. weather its what i want to hear, sarcastic, or rude, oh well i asked and expect the truth.

One of the toughest things to pick up on is what is intended behind the words that are typed. We have members who are long on knowledge but short on tact. They can "tell it like it is" and offend people who really were expecting something nicer. Some folks think they are funny or sarcastic and some of their readers get very upset when they think it was meant to be serious. We could all be trying harder to make sure we don't come off mean when we aren't. Try to always use the happy face or LOL to indicate the comment was in fun. For some remarks, even a happy face can't help, the reader may still be offended. Think about that and adjust your message to not appear to be mean in the first place. If you see questionable posts, click on the "Notify" button in that post. That goes to a moderator. Tell him in that notice form what you think. We may not always agree, but we promise to look at the situation and make a prompt decision on what to do.

I agree respect should be given, to Newbies and Veterans. Too many times I have seen a somewhat newbie ask a question/value on something and get a truthful non sugarcoated response from a knowledgeable Veteran and get upset because it is not what they wanted to hear. I think the Veterans get a lot less respect on here than newbies do, remember They have been around since the first days of collecting this stuff and basically have seen it all, so listen to them with an open mind and don't get mad if they tell you that rusty Quaker State sign you just bought for $200. is only worth $50. take it as a lesson learned.

Pate is in Dallas (at the Texas Motor Speedway) and Round Top is in Houston. Roundtop, Texas is in Roundtop....is one of the biggest antique fairs in North America...70 miles northwest of Houston. I go every year for 4 days Pate is between Fort Worth and Denton Texas at Texas Motor Speedway...one of the 5 largest swap meets in the US. If you line up every vendor end on end it would stretch 8 miles. I set up at Pate every year for the whole week with Scott Gabbard (paintdude) Dave Thompson (canasoius).and starting last year my good friends Chip Fohle (Chips Dixie gas) and Maurice (souperhigh)...guys, we need more spaces.. stop by and see us Jimmy D and Drew. Just look up and find the yellow number 5 Texas Terry Labonte flag. we can also point you to alot of old gas members that are there. oh yeah...group hug...who started that bull about men hugging other men ? How about just a handshake or sing Kum Bi Ya...Kum Bi Ya

Interesting discussion.Out here,I have said many times,"if a guy has three bent up cans and one fence beater sign and is happy with them and proud of them then he/she is just as much a member of this hobby as any of us and should be treated accordingly".
I really feel strongly about that and I am much more likely to "take on" a veteran than I am to insult or discourage a newbie.I fully realize that they are the future of this hobby and must be convinced to enter it.JMO.

As a newbie (got interested in Petroliana in 2005), I joined this forum in 2008. Have learned so much from this forum & continue learning. Great veteran collectors to learn from, I respect their input/opinions! Many thanks to Jim & moderators to keep this form a fun place to visit, share & learn.
