...fake...computer type...run away, run away!
Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

All are fakes. They are not machine made. Each one is hand painted. Not sure exactly how they are doing them, but they all have the background color aged by lightly sanding the finish and then the artwork is applied on top. When finished, then they rub off parts of the lettering to make it look old. Made on a shiny galvanized looking metal.

Do you think they are made here or over seas? I would say over seas due to the labor cost. The mobil sign looks close to original. Not sure if they made these in a flange version though. Border is different from original.

They are metal painted signs, not porcelain, and look to be hand painted by someone who is a very good artist and striper. Most of them are either a different size than originals, or are single sided rather than double sided as originals. The Oilzum that just sold was done on the end of some kind of display, originals are porcelain, double sided. The Texaco that just sold is originally a small, double sided rack sign. Their's was a larger single sided version.

I talked to a very knowledgeable member here on oldgas, and he said that this seller has turned up at shows back east. He has seen his signs in person and says he would not take them for free. I'm not sure if he has ever been talked about here on oldgas. I hate to see people get ripped off. He sold more signs tonight and listed several more new creations.

Look at the completed auctions that still have pictures. Look closely. I don't think ANY are real.
