Mounting holes are in the wrong place. Another high end repop not many know about. I was clued into this a few years ago by a very sophisticated west coast collector. The repop I saw even had the makers name on it.

I remember 15-20 years ago when reading an article stating that the originals always have the makers name, and the repops didn't. I have also heard that they were produced by the original maker, Donaldson, in the 70's , if that is the case are they repro's or late production, no matter what they are identical and are awesome signs, if anyone wants to sell me one I'd like to have a couple more for a future station. Does anyone know for sure without speculating or repeating heresay?

They are not "identical" as far as heresay- I got it right out of the horses mouth that had them re-done in the 70's. I always thought the one I had was original until one day a visitor was looking at that sign & said that is a later addition sign, I asked him how he knew that and he said because he was the one that did it, he went to the sign company and they still had the dies- since then I did get an original from him..have seen the later additions with & without sign co on botom right.

Thats good information, and obviously from a reliable source, if they are not identical could you help by identifying the distiguishable differences. I have had 3, and in reviewing my photos, the one I have now looks identical excpet it is near mint and the position of the mounting holes.

The top one is the original..mounting holes closer to edge note on bottom the outside yellow border is wider Both the top & the bottom signs read in bottom right corner THE DONALDSON ART SIGN CO. COVINGTON, KY Bottom sign appears to be a little longer length wise, maybe 3/16th"..sorry for the poor picture as I was holding bottom sign while taking picture

Nice to see the seller took the "info" and updated the auction.
advertologist, I have had both old and new versions but never at the same time to compare each. The one I have now (original) has taller lettering for the "Donaldson Art ..." The repo had smaller/shorter lettering. Is this the case with the two you have?
They are so close in look, easy to get the two confused. I unknowingly sold the repo one I had as an original, to a member on this site. I had been told that is was an original by a couple people but was told by the buyer that it wasn't. It was one of the latter ones. I offered full refund but he kept it anyways. Always have felt kinda stupid about it. At that time, I only knew about looking for the "Donaldson Art ..." marking, never knew about the hole placements.
Sell me your Gilmore Oil Co. stuff...

Just compared the 2....That is correct- Now we have 3 differences, mounting holes, wider yellow border & the size of Donaldson Art..

Thanks for sharing the details. Not being a Sign collector, I am happy to have a quality repro, as a guy that sells the occasional piece, it's nice to be able to know what to look for.

OK, so looking at the photos below, you can see the differences in the border, holes and "Donaldson" lettering. The one on top is an original, and the one on the bottom is obviously a repro. Thanks for your help, I hope this will serve collectors in the future, this sign has long been a problem, but I think we have nailed it down for posterity
