I would offer 650 -700 if you can drive to pick it up. That is a nice sign. If I were in Fl, I would already be on my way. Good luck.

Looks like the same sign someone posted on here a few days ago asking about the value.

How hard would it be to fix the bend or should it be left alone?

You could take a hammer and an anvil, and pound the bend flat but you might lose a tad bit more porcelain---OR---you could leave it as is. I'd pound it flat, I've done it before with very little additional damage!

I'd like it to be flat but don't want to make it worse. I can live with the bend bc it has a nice field.

OLDGAS gets Used again, There should be a fee for a 1st time poster to get a value of an item, reimbursed if they don't put it on ebay within a week

Hey, i use forums all the time to get info..... i see nothing wrong with her asking for opinions from us.
Miken, you could sandwich the bend between two pieces of flat iron and clamp them down tight. however, expect that possibly and likely more porc will chip off...not much mind you, just telling you what you might experience.

My only concern is that I dont hurt the value of the sign doing that. Down the road if I sell it I'd like to get my money back plus a little.

either that or grab 3/4" of the damaged edge with big beefy vise-grips and bend it back flat as you can.

This sign has an interesting story. The seller on ebay is not the person who posted the value question here on Oldgas. I was told that the new owner bought it from the finder for $400 - told her that's all it was worth because of the bend and she believed him! Then he goes and puts it on ebay the same day he bought it for more the double what he paid for it!

I was emailing back and forth with the finder because I knew they had the sign for sale, and I was going to go look at it. I only live about 20 minutes from them. I about fell out of my chair when they told me they let it go for $400. That's the only reason I know the story. I feel bad for the finder. This is just my opinion, but I think they were taken on this one.

They were scrapping for $$, they did OK for what they had into it, 0 or very little. That $400 might have feed them for the next few weeks while the new seller might not get paid in 2 weeks.

I know, they didn't do bad. I just don't like knowing the way it went down. Supposedly the buyer gave them an "appraisal" because he is a collector. To me there is a difference if you are just trying to buy a piece for your collection at the best price you can get it for. It's another thing if you mislead someone then try and double your money. I just don't think that is good for the hobby.

I also notice that the sign is back in the ring which covers a fair amount of the true damage.
also wanted to make clear that i'd sell mine for the but it now price on ebay, not the price that diane got for it.

I sent her a PM about the sign when she first asked about a value. Told her I have one in a little better shape that I gave $800 for a few years ago. She had a good idea of what the sign is worth. $400 now may have been better than $600 or more later, especially if they do not want to mess with shipping it or dragging it to a show or swap meet to try to sell. It sounds like they made some fast money on it and took the offer. 0ne can hold out for the "top doller" and end up not selling it for a while. One in the hand...

Feel bad for the finder? How about the person who sold it or gave it away with the scrap pile? Hard to believe, but most scrappers would be very happy with getting $400 for $20 worth of scrap iron....for doing nothing more than seperating it from the pile being hauled to the yard. $400 is very fair price for both parties...sign has severe damage.....and more to come if it is flattened back out. Very fair and realistic to ask $850 or BEST OFFER. I'm sure a $750 offer would take it...$350 profit! Wrong! Subract probably $50 in Ebay fees + gas + advertising costs +++...not to mention the time involved to make the deal on it and go get it, get pictures, deal with buyers. Maybe crate it and ship it....who came out smelling like a rose! Jim

Regardless of who made or lost money and where and how it was found, the positive is the finder saved this cool piece of Americana from possibly going to the dump or being shredded for scrap.

I agree...just last year I talked to a scrapper who scrapped out a clockface. He was calling me about a MS 80 he saved after he heard from someone that people were looking for "those old gas pumps"....too late for the clock though.
A lot of the emphasis in this "hobby" is on money.....and seemingly becomeing more so as it evolves.
Jim
