Yes I have seen these basic 97 meters go for that. I prefer the older model with the crank handle. Most people remember them as a kid and want one in their garage. I am not sure why they bring so much. It seems like there are a lot of them out there. I see at least 3 or four at swap meets and always a few on ebay. I prefer the Eco 37 design. The 97 is easier to get parts for so that might be one reason for the demand. Jack sells a few of his month for $1500 +, but those are nice meters and you know they are done RIGHT!

I would it is NOT the norm, a few uneducated people buy them but they are still at all the shows and hard to get 600. out of a restored one

I agree. They are very desireable and bring high prices. Pretty difficult to replace once you part with the ones you have in stock. Paul www.severngaspumps.com

I agree with you guys. They are out there, but I too have seen them on ebay go for that price every so often. It is the luck of the draw when it comes to the item being bid up. However if you check the buyer out, it looks like he is a shill. (sp?)
Here is his history: Bidder Information Bidder: 7***z( 44) Feedback: 100%Positive Item description: Vintage ECO Model 97 Air Pump Meter Wall Mount Bids on this item: 11 30-Day Summary Total bids: 12 Items bid on: 2 Bid activity (%) with this seller: 91% Bid retractions: 0 Bid retractions (6 months): 0
Category No. of Bids Seller Last Bid
Collectibles > Decorative Collectible Brands 1 Seller 1 3h Collectibles > Gas & Oil 11 Seller 2 <1h
Take note of the red highlighted area. 11 bids on the item in the last hour. Most are between 30 minutes and 15 minutes apart.
I smell something and it does not smell like roses!

There are a few air meters out there with excellent levels of restoration that can reasonably command those prices. However the average joe sees this and thinks ALL meters are worth that. You see this alot on eBay especially with cars.
Sometimes I wonder if collectors artifically bid things up just to increase the value of an item or series of items. If people want an item bad enough they will pay it, especially with the convenience factor of ebay.
