Curt,
When I resized the pic from 640 X 480 I went to 512 X 340.

Even with a flash it seems that most pics could use a little brightening up. It brings out the detail.

Scott, Yeah, its yours. If you ever get tired of looking at it give me a shout.
Bob

Thanks Bob.

I'll use that size from here on out. Seems like it's not that much smaller than the 640 size. I like the idea of making the photos lighter too. I didn't see that globe post until after I had posted my photo.

We have enough discussions like this and the site will become "picture perfect".

Click on "Help!" at the bottom left of most Shop Talk pages to get help with images and other questions about Shop Talk.

There is technically a 7 image limit per message, but the real limit is determined by time. There is a "time-out" limit for the server to wait for the images to be delivered and the code to be processed. If the images are slow getting to Shop Talk when the message is submitted, the limit may be exceeded and the message post will fail. This can be caused by large images, slow image server or high traffic levels.

So, if you are going to submit images over 100k in memory size, only put one image in each message. Add more with additional replies.

We still have many, many users on dial-up connections. They painfully wait for huge images to load or they give up and move on. The thumbnail images are very efficient for all users, especially those on dial-up. A good graphics program can optimize an image to compress it down to less than 50k for the 90% of the images that don't require minute detail. It would be a good thing for our community to keep image memory sizes reasonable so all users can enjoy the experience.

We've seen a big increase in the number of members submitting images themselves. Congratulations to those who have gotten past the challenge of that first one and are empowered to share even more pictures with the rest of us. We all love images. Keep them coming!

Bob's globe image examples show the difference not only in height and width, but also in the memory size of the image file. His first large image was 72k and the cropped, smaller one is only 27k. So that image loads over twice as fast. Still looks great. Very important for those who don't have DSL or cable.

Jim,
We have dial up. Our connection speed is usually around 32K. I feel like I'm growing old just waiting for images to load.

That's painful. I know some areas are out of reach of DSL even where I live. Fortunately we are close enough and I don't know if I could live with dial up again. I have wanted to look at the posts on a dial up computer to see how they load so it helps to have your input Bob. Hopefully I can squeeze those photos down to a managable size for you and the rest of the dial up gang.

You need to put after to get the photo to appear.

You've got it now, roadtriping. Thanks for helping him Curt. Mac jumped in with good advice when Steve needed it. I think I may nominate you guys as unofficial image posting coaches.
Have a great weekend!

Hey Jim if it wasn't for you I'd still be "posting challenged". Just trying to pass on the lessons I learned from you and the other Oldgassers. Besides, I like to see everyones else's stuff!

In reply to Curt about dial up. That is all I have at home because I live 10 miles from civilization. (Which I love) Therefore at best I hook up at 26Kbps which loads at a rapid snail pace. At work I am on a Lan system which loads quick. Like map of the month I will have to wait to view at work because half the pictures didn't even load. I post pictures from home and it is a slow process. Ted
