Hey Tom... E-mail me a pic or two and I'll post it for you. This way everubody can get a better idea of what you have. Be sure to check it for any tags or signs that might tell us some additional information.

Here's a shot of Tom's oil cabinet....

He also sent a pic of the tag, but it was a little fuzzy so I didn't post it. The tag says its a Modern Metals EC-28. The Gas Pump Guide, by Jack Sim, values it at $350.00. Nice Find Tom.... I want one of theses too...

In that condition, there's no way I'd repaint it. Do as D0d0 says and basically leave it alone

Tom. I'm not a Phillips guy, but my guess is "Thats the right color". The reason that I say this is, an oil rack is most likley to stay at a station, it's not likley to go to a farm when it is retired, where it probably would be repaintd. If it were repainted, it's not likley that the person painting it would go to the trouble to remove and/or not paint over the sign, lock, handles and tag.

Get up close and take a good look, any repaint should be easy to tell....

Any Phillips guys out there have any input?

The paint is more than likely original, but was the sign on it replaced at some point. Does the age of the oil cabinet match the age of the sign? I don't know anything about oil cabinets. Did they have interchangeable signs from different oil Co.?

If you look at the cabinet and at the sign, they just don't look like a match. The sign looks to me like it was cut down to fit.

My 2 cents worth,

Brian

It seems that the oil cabinets were a piece of equipment that was offered in colors to match the brand of gasoline. I don't have any Modern Literature showing different colors, I do have color Bennett flyers showing the colors they painted their oil cabinets. They had individual flyers for all these companies: Mobil, Texaco, Pure, Richlube, Phillips, Pennszoil, Gulf, City Service, Kendall, Marathon, Quaker State, Shell, Sinclair, Veedol and even a generic painted cabinet. See: http://www.crspub.com/gaspumps/Bennett.htm

...I don't believe the signs were cut down (I have one like that somewhere) but I don't believe a Phillips 66 cabinet would have been yellow...more likely the cabinet with the 66 sign would have been white...seems like the cabinet I got my sign from was all white, save the sliding stainless doors...

Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

THANK YOU FOR EVERYONES INPUT IT SEEMS THIS COLOR COMBO IS NOT COMMON.EITHER WAY I WOULD NOT TOUCH IT.I GUESS WHEN I FIRST STARTED A FEW YEARS BACK THE THINGS I PICKED UP WERE ROUGH AND NEEDED TO BE RESTORED BUT AS THINGS HAVE PROGRESSED I APPRECIATE THE ORIGINALITY AND ALSO I HAVE BEEN EXTREMELY FORTUNATE TO GET MANY ITEMS IN GOOD CONDITION.AND ITS A LOT LESS WORK WHICH GIVES ME TIME FOR MORE SEARCHING.
THANKS AGAIN.I AM SURE I WILL HAVE ANOTHER QUESTION SOON.

Here on the WEST coast, we check the back side of the signs for HANCOCK or MOHAWK oil signs. Instead of just painting over the graphic's, they would flip the signs & add new decals for what they were selling. SURE GLAD THEY DID !

I'm trusting a very rusty memory that those colors are right. Back in the '60s I worked at a 66 station here in Ohio and part of the nightly shut down was putting the blasted cover on the oil displays. Never fun and worse in miserable rainy weather. Anyhow that rack looks very familiar in those colors.
