I just picked up a Mobilgas Keyhole sign, it's dated '46. I am paying $225 for it. Is this a good deal or average for the sign? I also just purchased a 42" Tydol gasoline off Feebay for $500. has a few bad spots on it but overall pretty nice. Thoughts on it? Fair price?

Great. Thanks for the comments. I have collected for awhile, but I have been getting more serious about it. I don't have any of the books or anything so I am pretty ignorant about "values". I guess in the end, something is worth what the person is willing to pay for it.

I just hopped on to check out another sign I picked up. There were a few posts about it a similar sign being fake due to the font. It's not identical to the known fake by anymeans it's a different size (mine is 21" x 16"), different fonts, but it is a one sided Socony "Medium" sign. Looks like a lubster paddle type sign, but obviously a lot bigger. Thoughts?

Is the back porcelain or paint ? Whenever I see a porcelain sign with a rusty back I start thinking imported fake. The back of a sign is protected from the elements and should be in better shape that the front. But then again,I don't see any mounting holes. Does it look like there was a flange broken off the bottom ?

It looks to be porcelain, but it is not smooth to the touch. Like there was a light coat over the metal. It is rough if you run you hand over it. There are two mounting holes toward the bottom. If you look close at the picture you can see them where the porcelain is chipped away. If it is a fake, they went through great extremes to make it look old. What puzzles me is what is application would have been? There are just the two holes, no broken flange.
