I too bought a sign about that size out of I believe the same auction. I could not believe when it was delivered that they made a wood crate to ship it...I would have just wrapped it in two or three layers of heavy cardboard. I thought I was really going to get soaked for shipping, To my suprise...it was not high at all, I believe $37.
My rule is I have to REALLY want or need something from an online auction. Good deals often evaporate from the extra expenses for not attending in person.

Attending in person may save on shipping and buyer premium percentage, but you have to figure gas, motel and other costs. That item you got at a swap meet or distant auction really costs the sum of the item and all costs to get there and back. But it's all good if you really enjoy the experience.

I've gotten items from Matthews Auctions shipped. By the time you figure they actually pay people to pack, buy the materials and pay the freight, it is reasonable. I kept the last crate with the intention to use it someday to ship another sign. It is bulletproof, well almost.
