Have an opportunity to buy a Mobilgas pump plate shield sign today. I have no picture. Seller is known to me and says it is NOS mint shape...which also leads me to believe that it may be a repro. is there a surefire way of determining the fake from the real in the details of the graphics?

If it says "Licensed by Mobil Corp" along bottom right it is definiitely a fake.

To add to Wes' comments....almost all are marked "IR" and the year, or "McMath-Axelrod", or "MC-AX". There is a version with an "open a" in the word Mobilgas that is not marked with a manufacturer's name........but these are not very common. Also, the west coast versions with black rather than blue don't have a manufacturer's mark.

To add to what Richard said the west coast versions are black letters and black border with no mfg. marks and I don't think there has ever been a reproduction made using the black.

Ok Thaks guys. I did buy it. I knew about the IR and MC-ax markings but wasn't sure if the repro guys were adding this to their fakes as well. Here it is. It is marked I.R 47.Also picked up this cool oily rags porcelain sign.

Good one. Looks just like the one I picked up earlier this year:
