I WAS WALKING AROUND AN INLET AT LOW TIDE THE OTHER DAY WHEN I SPOTTED A LARGE DIAMETER TRUCK TIRE SITTING IN THE SAND AT THE SHORES EDGE. I LOOKED FOR A BRAND AN WAS SHOCKED TO SEE THE "GUM-DIPPED" SLOGAN ON THIS HUNK OF RUBBER. THAT'S GOTTA BE MORE THAN 60 YEARS OLD AND STILL LEGIBLE! IN THE OLD DAYS IF OTHER SOURCES LIKE BROKEN CONCRETE WERE NOT AVAILABLE TO STOP EROSION FROM HAPPENING, THEY WOULD CUT A TIRE OPEN AND FILL IT WITH CEMENT! JUST GOES TO SHOW YOU HOW LONG RUBBER TAKES TO BREAK DOWN!

I guess it takes more time for an old tire to break down than plastic or styrofoam. I wonder if you mounted the tire it would still hold air????????????????

THANKS! I ONCE FOUND A BUNCH OF OLD TIRES HALF BURIED IN THE GROUND TO EDGE A PATHWAY OUT IN THE WOODS. STILL SCRATCHIN MY HEAD ON THAT ONE! ANYWAY MOST OF THEM WERE THE OLD WHITE WALL STYLE. I FOUND ONE THAT WAS WIDE W/W AND HAD THE NAME FLYING A EMBOSSED ON THE SIDES. I DUG IT UP AND UNFORT THE BURIED PART WAS IN REALLY BAD SHAPE! ON OTHER WALKS I HAVE SEEN GULF AND PHILLIPS 66 TIRES IN THE WOODS!

Old tires break up, not down. Man Made rubber does not decompose, and that is why they are titled as hazardous waste. Since they are hazardous waste that's why modern shops need to hire licensed haulers to get rid of them.

SSam: I've got an old Cooper Armor Cord tire with a matching Cooper display stand in my shop. They add a great touch.

OKAY, AFTER SOME YARDWORK THIS MORNING, I DECIDED TO GO TO A PINE BARRENS WOODED AREA THAT I HAVEN'T BEEN TO IN LIKE 6 YEARS. I REMEMBER IT WAS NOTORIOUS FOR BEING AN ILLEGAL DUMPING GROUND! IT WAS ALSO THE PLACE WHERE I SAW THE FLYING A TIRE. WELL, I COULD TELL UPON MY ARRIVAL THAT MUCH OF THE DUMPING WAS CLEANED UP AND AMPLE PARKING WAS ADDED TO THE SEVERAL HUNDRED ACRES OF HIKING AND RIDING TRAILS.
WHILE THIS WAS ONLY MY FIRST HIT TO RE-ACQUAINT MYSELF WITH THE WOODS IN THIS AREA, I DID FIND SOME RANDOM TIRES BEARING GAS STATION NAMES:

FIRST THIS GULF WITH THE OLDER LOGO, PROBABLY OVER 50 YEARS OLD:

THEN THIS MOBIL TIRE FROM THE 56-66 ERA:

AND ANOTHER BRAND "HERCULES" WHICH I BARELY REMEMBER:

ALL HALF BURIED WITH PINE NEEDLES! I EVEN FOUND A TIRE WITH A TREE GROWING THRU IT!

OKAY, I DID GO OUT HIKING ON MONDAY WITHOUT A SURVEY OF THE AREA IN MY HANDS. YESTERDAY WAS DIFFERENT....I USE A GOOGLE EARTH MAP AND FOUND OUT THAT I WAS OFF ONLY BY A FEW HUNDRED YARDS. KEEP IN MIND THAT I HAVEN'T BEEN BACK TO THIS AREA IN ALMOST 10 YEARS!!

WELL, I WAS FOR THE MOST PART SHOCKED TO SEE THAT THE FLYING A WWW TIRE THAT I UNEARTHED 10 YEARS AGO WAS STILL IN THE SAME VACINITY!...MOVED MAYBE 15' FROM IT PLACE IN THE EARTH! HOWEVER, THE TIRE IS SO ROTTEN THAT JUST MOVING IT AROUND FOR A PICTURE HAD IT ALMOST BREAKING UP IN MY HANDS!

I DID HIKE AROUND IN THE WOODS FOR ABOUT 3 HOURS TAKING RANDOM TRAILS. I MUST'VE COVERED ABOUT 2-3 MILES AND MY BODY FELT LIKE IT TOO!

HERE ARE SOME MORE OLDIES I FOUND EITHER ALONE OR IN PILES. ONE PILE WAS NEAR AN OLD FOUNDATION AND WHAT APPEARED TO BE AN OLD GARAGE WITH A CONCRETE FLOOR.

A cool look at old tires.
A lot of mechanics have been injured or killed by those old "split" rings in that last picture.

Some times called "Widow Makers". The old tube type, truck tires, were so stiff, that the rims were, two or three pieces. Basicly, the lip, on one side, was removable, so that the tire, would slip over the rim. The mechanich, would then, install the "Ring". If the ring was installed incorrectly, or failed, when he aired up the tire, the ring would fly of the wheel assembly. Hence the name. MANY tiremen, were hurt, or even killed, with these things. Eventually, a cage was used, to put the tire in when it was being aired up. But even that was scary.

I dont have any pics, because I dont have any of these around.

Doc;
If you want a close up look at one of those rims.
The old Blue GMC potato truck you posted a picture of appears to have those split ring rims on it, as well as a couple of the others you posted.

ONLY A FEW MINUTES FROM MY HOUSE YESTERDAY NEAR WHERE THE BACK ROAD CROSSES THE RAILROAD TRACKS IS AN OLD ABANDONED WOODEN R/R WEIGH STATION ABOUT 12 X 12' IN SIZE. BEHIND THE BUILDING ARE SEVERAL BRICK FOUNDATIONS IN THE GROUND. I HAPPEN TO SPOT AN OLD QUART OIL CAN FADED TO THE POINT OF NOTHING....OR WAS IT? FLIPPED IT OVER AND SAW THIS.

WELL IT WAS PRETTY DIRTY, BUT ASIDE FROM SITTING OUTSIDE FOR 45+ YEARS, I'D SAY IT CLEANED UP PRETTY GOOD DESPITE THE DENTS. DARN AMAZING IF YOU ASK ME. LOL!

Great pics, working in truck tire factory for,to long these bring back lots of memories. In the 70s & early 80s, we would do,what was called plate changes. you change plate in curing mold, and the tire would read shell, exxon, what every they had order for. these were small runs for private labels. It was the same tire, same compounds, new name. As small privates, fell by the way side,so did this practice. The only one I could clearly tell was a plate was ajax you can see plate inpression around wording. And thank god we evoled away from split rims.

ca 1998 (when I got out of the Army) they still used split rings AND had a cage outside every bay. I met a female E6 truckdriver whohad a HORRIBLE looking scar that ran the length of her arm (wrist to under her rolled up BDU sleeve) she was airing up a newly installed tire and leaned away for a second when it popped. Split her arm completely and would've killed her had she not leaned away. I had the decency not to ask the details on how it happened - my imagination was enough. Thank god I mainly worked on track vehicles.

I have been studying the old school house and (Richfield) store/gas station down the road from my house. I learned back in the 1920s or 30s a guy was killed down there filling up a high pressure tire. When I was a kid,I used to change those split rim tires for the farmer I worked for, for extra money. No tire cage, just ignorance. Now I get a little nervous just blowing up a tube.

The 41 IH truck I posted on here a while back has the original split rims on it. I changed all the tires and mounted them myself, tire shops went nuts when I told them what I had. Almost like they would get some kind of social disease if they even looked at them. I grew up driving these old trucks with this style rim and changed these tires since day one. It was part of the truck driving job in this part of the world. I wanted a shop to do this for b'cuz I have a disability with a leg but as I said I did it. Just use caution, make sure it all fits good, I wrapped tow chain around them in 3 places when I put air to them. Air slowly and when you get them about half up, let the air out and start over again. The cages were great and no doubt there have been bad events with these, I know of one death in this area from airing it up stupidly. I have never blown a tire or rim off a truck while driving, slow leak flats have been common but never sent a rim into space. When they were all that we had we didn't think a damn thing of it.

In my years at the factory,I spoke about,I know of two times, someone was, badly hurt. One had serious, long term he never got over. We had test wheel room, where they mounted, and ran,for test, untill tire falled. I agree with Terry, these were good rims, just dangerous. I also, have seen truck tires changed with no more than hand tools and mobile air compressor. If you can do this I'll have to give you thumbs up, I would sat and watch these guys in amazement. They made it look so simple,as they done this every day for living. I'll end with this, as I get long winded.Only took one of these, rims flying apart, during air up to get your respect.

About a month ago, I had to get the rims replaced on a trailer for the company I work for. The trailer had split rims on it and the guys kept complaining that every time they went into Ohio the state police would write them big tickets because split rims are banned there.

Found this real oldie in a ravine last week. The narrow rubber on the wooden spoked wheels leads me to believe almost 80-90+ years old. must have been a dually rear truck style. One tire looks air filled and another along side it looks solid (outside) almost as if to assist the air filled tire.

I wish! Unfort, it was located just over 2-miles from my car. The only other option would be to huff and puff it up the ravine and load it up on top of the bluff roughly 200' above the beach. I'm sure there are other options....like airlifting them LOL! shocked

For those of you who don't know old tire sizes, the way to determine the size of the tires in the pictures you just posted is to double the last number ("4" X 2 = 8) now subtract that from the other number and you have a 24" tire.

Your estimate about the year is probably correct, they were still using wood spoke wheels on cars and trucks in the early 1930's. My 1930 Studebaker Roadster (Commander) had wood spoke wheels, the Diplomate and the President had wire wheels.

Found this old truck tire the other day on the beach still on a rusty rim. I'd have to say it's over 50 years old, but how long it's been on the beach getting covered and uncovered by sand over the years is unknown....still brought a smile to my face.

They were very dry and i had to bring them back to life. I wear them almost every day. I realize this isnt exactly the same thing as the tires but ive always wanted to share these old boots with someone that might care.

BF GOODRICH made sneakers from 1935. I believe their line of sneakers were "P-F." I kinda remembers ads in the 60's for P-F Flyers.

I collect Michelin tires, haven’t been able to find any car or truck tires but would love to find Michelin ones if they are out there. Here’s mine, also have a war grade one around here somewhere

Looking for Michelin items + NJ oil company related items (Mohawk, Guardian, Whiz, etc) + animal-related petroliana + Gargoyle/Shell/Sinclair items
