While stripping my Bowser 585, I came accross a piece of sheet metal bolted to the side. I removed the bolts and uncovered 2 Nicely cut holes on the side. The metal was cauked to the side and I had to cut through it to get it off. Any idea what these are for??

Somebody cut them for a purpose back in the day when it was used at the stations. Maybe a farmer? They are not factory and serve no special purpose.

Thanks, Phil

OK, thanks!!! I was thinking of putting the sheet metal that covered it on the inside instead of the outside when reassembling. (I can draw any old car but can't weld to save my life.)

This might be the ideal project to teach youself how to weld. These holes are a simple tack and fill. They will lay flat on the table so they are nothing fancy. Once filled and sanded, you'll never know that they were there. Good luck, Paul www.severngaspumps.com

I would need to buy a much better welderbefore tackling this. I have a 1979 110 Arc welder!!!! (maybe that is why I can't weld)

Go get yourself a small tig 110 volt welder. I use a Lincoln but there are some other nice ones available. Practice on scrap sheetmetal. You'll surprise yourself with how easy it is. The tricks are to tack and not run a continuous bead on light stuff. A heat dam is very helpful as well. Good luck, Paul www.severngaspumps.com
