I know after working 15 years on a model a ford is should know this but, what is the best way to get of Gas Varnish (years of dried gummy gas)? My sightglass manifold has nice original parts but everything is coated in varnish.

zippo lighter fluid, works great, put it on and start wiping before it dries.

Home Depot sells a commercial degreaser called "PURPLE". I put some in a plastic can....it eats up aluminum so beware...and drop the sight glasses in. Leave them for a day. When you take them out, wear rubber gloves as the cleaner will cause distress to your skin. They come out nearly clean.....might need to use a scotch brite to finish them but all the varnish will be loose or gone. Paul www.severngaspumps.com

I'll have to use the lighter fluid on the aluminum parts and purple on everything else.

extra strong solution of oxie clean...let it soak in a bucket. please be warned that a strong solution will burn your skin if left on. Been using it for years to clean greasy pump parts, trim, etc... will remove that old gasoline odor also. I have let parts soak in a 5 gallon bucket over night and most of the parts will come out free of grease and paint after rinsing off with water. You probably have some at home already

I use SOS steel wool pads on mine. I have never noticed any scratching on mine. Brady
