Yes, it's real. The fakes of these are single lenses in a Capco body. This one is embossed as it should be and the weathering is right for a used original of its age. Darin

I guess I should clarify what I wrote above. Not "fakes", but the newer licensed reproductions are glass lenses in oval Capco bodies. I don't know of any fakes of this embossed globe made to fool an unsuspecting buyer. Anyone that knows a little bit about this particular globe and its history would know this one is fine. The repros are made for people who are restoring the Gargoyle oil cabinets these went on and who don't want to spend the $1000 or more on an original globe. I've also seen the repros on top of visibles but I think it looks kind of silly! Have a good one, Darin

Dan sold a very nice one at the Iowa Gas Auction for $2100 plus premium. I noticed an oldgasser bought it. It was the nicest I have seen.

I bid 750 on it.... And final bid was 1150+7%. Reverse side was worse than front side in picture. I told the lady that won the globe that she paid close to full retail on it, but she assured me she could find someone that was willing to pay a little more for it!!! You just can't get a good buy anymore!! Oh well it was exciting to see anyway.
Thanks a bunch on the help guys!!!

I know how you feel...I was at an auction and they had a pretty rare SOCONY milk glass globe. The globe had lots of fading on both lenses- body was pretty rusted and one lens has a half moon crack at the bottom. The globe on a good day was worth maybe $1000-$1200 if mint upwards of $2000. The bidding slowed at $500 then I ran it up to $1800 and dumped it on someone who just kept going. It amazes me how many uneducated antique dealers/flippers go to these auctions and pay over retail price for these items and expect to make a profit. Some even drive 2-4 hours to get to some of these auctions!! It's hard to buy some of this stuff at auctions because of the competition you are dealing with. Some people just do not know and get carried away. Once in a while you can find a good deal. I think you did the right thing stopping at where you did. There will always be a better one out there!
