I wondered if anyone could help me find out some history on a set of race flags I have. They are cotton, maybe 32x46 inches stapled to a wood pole. They all have the pegasus on them. I bought them 15 yrs ago from an old man that said he bought them from a gas station when he was younger. Can anyone help me identify these. Thanks in advance..

If they are the checkered flags with the red Pegasus, it's my understanding they were made to be mounted on the cab of Mobilgas delivery trucks.....one on each side. They weren't actually "race" flags, but were made to look similar in order to advertise Mobil's heavy involvement in sponsoring various race cars and drivers. Large Pegasus decals were on many Indy race cars in the early years indicating Mobil as a sponsor.

I'll get a picture of them up soon, I know I have one somewhere. They are all (5or 6 total) different. One checkered, green, yellow, red, blue and another color. They all have a six inch pegasus in the corner except the checkered, it has a big one in the center.. Thanks to all for the info, I will be putting them up for auction as soon as I find out a little more about them or feel free to contact me with offers. Thanks emartin@idahomagazine.com

My family used to race hydroplanes and we had a few checkererd flags with the Pegasus. The local Mobil Oil dealer donated them for the races. He just ordered them, didn't use them on any of his trucks. this was in the mid to late 60s. for what it is worth.

I'd agree with the comments by Jack and Alex above.......items weren't always used as originally intended. Using the flags in actual racing events would be logical.....and good advertising!! They were made to look like race flags, why not use them for that purpose if the situation presents itself?

Sure sounds like a set of racing flags. Mobil was a big sponsor of both circle track and sportcar racing in the fifties. BTW the color code was as follows: checker - race over, green - start/go, yellow - caution/ no passing, red - stop now, blue (sometimes blue with a yellow stripe) - you are about to be passed, sometimes a yellow & red striped flag was used to tell of oil on the track... we called that the "surprize test of driving skill" flag!
