Hey guys, I was hoping that someone on here could help me identify the use of this glass bottle. A friend of mine lost his uncle and inherited his hardware store and garage. He found about 80 of these in the garage and they have an oil/petrol smell to them. I know these are not the traditional oil bottles that we normally see but thought if any one would know it would be on here. Thanks for looking and for any help.

I see no connection to gas/oil. No value or demand for them either. Just plain old glass bottles
see me at Mason Dixon Gas, Spring Carlisle M114-115, and Hershey C4E-35.

Oil bottles used in the retail dispensing and sale of motor oil should have an embossed horizontal line near the top with embossed words, "Fill to line" even on generic bottles.

ok, thanks for the input. A few of the bottles actually have 30 W and 40 W on the bottom. I just thought that may have been the weight but it could be about anything I guess

Maybe the uncle emptied them of their original contents(moonshine?) and filled them with oil?

I just wrote an article for "Check the Oil" magazine on who invented the oil bottle and I pictured just about every company who made generic oil bottles for the trade.
There were also at least two companies who packaged oil in this type of bottle and sold them to service stations, 12 in a box. There is a mention of this in the article.

Thanks guys... that is awesome. I knew if anyone would know of anything similar it would be you guys. Thanks again Jack. Also on a side note I have begun restoring my Tokheim 800SH Commercial Pump. I will post pics in another post later. Going with a Sinclair Aviation theme for my own tastes. Thanks again guys. Can't wait to read your article Jack.

I would see if T-way could make some paper labels and do up a few of them. They would look pretty cool if they ended up looking like the sign!
