I am restoring a Wayne 80 gas pump and I have question about the ID tags. There are two tags on the pump. A larger ID tag and a smaller brass tag. What is the smaller brass tag for? And what do the numbers mean? The smaller tag is stamped M&E on top and just below that is stamped 23-11144. I have also seen these smaller brass tags on other pumps as well. Thanks for the info.

Pretty ovious what the M&S tag is for, but the small tag is probably from some distributor who owned service stations, owned the pumps, and had people running the stations for them.

Earl Ma wrote a great article for "Check the Oil," a couple of year ago, about the Gasoria stations (actually I sent him all the information and told him to write the article, it was not the kind of article I usually wrote). It was about the 150+ stations owned by Gasoria. These were the kind of stations that kept track of their equipment. Another example is the Milton Oil Co., they had over 150 stations in Missouri & Illinois.

This was a way they kept track of the equipment they had at every station. You just have to research who M & E were.

I've had many pumps and oil dispensers with the M&E tag. I was told by a employee of Standard of Indiana that it was the Standard Oil equipment inventory tag. I believe that jives with the branding of most of these items I had.
