Pretty ovious what the M&S tag is for, but the small tag is probably from some distributor who owned service stations, owned the pumps, and had people running the stations for them.
Earl Ma wrote a great article for "Check the Oil," a couple of year ago, about the Gasoria stations (actually I sent him all the information and told him to write the article, it was not the kind of article I usually wrote). It was about the 150+ stations owned by Gasoria. These were the kind of stations that kept track of their equipment. Another example is the Milton Oil Co., they had over 150 stations in Missouri & Illinois.
This was a way they kept track of the equipment they had at every station. You just have to research who M & E were.
