I just got his sign and wondered what i should do to clean it up. I am not interested in total restoration, but would like what is there to shine. How should I go about the rust?? I don't want to mess it up, just preserve what is still there. Thanks!!!!

I'd straighten up the flange a little- wipe it down with miriatic acid- rub it out with rubbing compound- wax it..

the miriatic (pool)acid will get rid of the rust- stand down wind or use a fan as not to breath fumes..

Straighten the flange as best you can and then go to the hardware store and get some muriatic acid. Put the sign outside on a flat workplace where things won't run off. Get a glass or plastic container to pour the acid into and be careful not to breathe the fumes. Wear rubber gloves too. Find some kind of an applicator that you can use to daub the acid onto the rust spots, as you want to leave the acid on them for a period of time. After about 15 minutes, use a cloth or rag to apply the acid to the face of the whole sign and let it sit for 2 to 3 minutes. After that, you can flush it with clean water to remove the acid and turn it over for the other side. Muriatic acid does wonders on rust and removes rust stains from porcelain very well, but don't leave it on the porcelain for too long at a time, or it can dull the finish somewhat. Good Luck!

If you are not comfortable with the acid, pick up a can of Bar Keepers Friend. It is the best that I have found for Cleaning rust and bringing back lustre to a porcelain sign

I've had problems in the past, working with the "cobalt blue" color. It's a tough one to clean. Anyone else? Don

Cobalt blue signs are very very hard to get real clean(fading and stains)....I have had some luck with a few socony signs that looked horrible and turned out great. Be very careful using the muratic acid!! I have the best luck on certain stains with 3m rubbing compound(the body shop grade). I would take care of the flange and cleaning. I would not touch it up with any paint. I would not Rec. using Bar Keeps Friend on this sign due to rust spots.

Sometimes the acid is just way to strong and don't stand downwind, stand upwind. I've found that toilet bowl cleaner for porcelain works the best and it does contain some acid. Straight pool cleaning muriatic acid is just too strong and will damage the porcelain

I just would like to add that if you put straight acid on for fifteen minutes you might be sorry. I would suggest to start off with a weaker mix for a shorter time and if that doesnt work then get a little more aggressive. Have a hose handy to rinse off the acid thoroughly. Sometimes acid rain and weather weakens some old porcelain. Also if you dump straight acid on the sign ,what ever runs off will damage whatever is under the sign, be it grass or concrete. Just sayin...

I would not Rec. using Bar Keeps Friend on this sign due to rust spots. That is what BKF removes??? What is your bad experience with BKF with regards to rust. If you have any doubts about using BKF just do a search on this sight and you will find most members have used it with great success

BKF is a great product, but with the exposed rust on that sign-it may cause some etching or lifting of the porcelain if left on to long. I used it on a similar condtion sign and left it on for less then 30 secs/washed it off and it did some minor damage to the sign. JM2C

...BKF says on the label that it may damage older porcelain surfaces...at least it used to...
Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...
