I recently acquired a Fry 17 5 gallon visible pump from my fahter. He restored it about 30 years ago, but it's been outside all those years and needs restored again. I have a question about the back side panel. There is a raised area below the door with 2 holes in it. I'm hoping that someone can solve the mystery. This pump is complete with the pump mechanism located in the base. The machine number is 17314. I've included a picutre of the panel.

Could the original skin have been replaced in the restoration process? This looks to be the skin needed for an external pump mounted FRY?? Paul www.severngaspumps.com

This was the back skin that was on the pump when my father bought it 30 years ago and restored it, but I was wondering the same thing myself after I saw a Fry visible pump on the internet with an external pump. I was at Hershey this past spring and showed a picture of it to Walt from PastGas. He said he hadn't seen anything like it before. He also commented that all the Fry pumps he's restored have been different (no 2 alike). I'm not actually sure where the pump came from before we got it. I may end up making a piece to cover the holes when I restore it (good or bad idea?)

The early GLM Fry pumps were all electric operated. They had a motor attached to a pump that was not in the pump, it was located on or near the tank.
GLM offered an accessory, a outside the pump, hand crank.

that looks like the answer I was looking for. Looks like my pump may have been pieced together at some point.

Your pumps back skin Might have been damaged at one time & a jobber replaced w/ what he had in backyard, or at one time it Did have the external pump.

I'm guessing the back skin was replaced at some point. The cast iron base/top, piping, etc. appear to be original. Is there anyway to date the pump based on the GLM machine number? This one is 17314.

Another question I have is the base fo the globe. The top on this pump is cast iron. I know my father never had the globe mounted correctly. I plan on adding a 15" metal globe body/glass. I just want to make sure I get the correct globe body to fit the cast iron top.

Does your top look like the one in Dick's picture or does it have a separate globe holding cup with a "t" shaped fitting that the conduits go into? The one piece top was used with the external mounted pump.

Pretty sure that mine had at one time a stamped steel globe holder, but I had a 4" base GASOLINE globe I wanted to put on it, so I machined a base for it.

I have a Fry 17 with the external pump and it has a cast iron globe holder on top!

Well, it's been a few years since my original post and I have to thanks the members of this forum for helping me see this to the end. Sam Cooper has been a big help with advice and a few trips to his house,

The Fry 17 project is nearly finished. Our son Kyle is making a brass pump handle locking pin in the machine shop at college, other than that it's pretty well done. I mounted it on a base with casters to be able to move it around the garage. So far it's works fairly well. All in all we are happy with the results (after a lot of work).

Restoring the lubester was my son's Kyle's idea. It wasn't in my plans for this fall, but he got the bug and had to do it before he went back to college.

The '31 Ford I've had for the past 10 years. Now I need a new garage (taller) to put it all in (still working on the wife for that).
