Thanks guys. It is one coat of XO Rust oil base paint from True Value Hardware. No clear coat or sanding of the paint, just the primer before painting. It dulls down a little over time. It was shinnier a mounth ago. This stuff is kind of hard to work with. It can not be put on heavy because it flows to much and you end up with runs and sags. Also if it is to heavy it will wrinkle and it can not be top coated before the fisrt coat dries or it will wrinkle. I like this paint better than Rustoleum, but the rustoleum is easier to work with.

Matt

I believe the true value paint is made by rustoleum. At what that paint costs you can redo it every year. I went to buy a qt of auto grade red for an Eco I am doing $125!!!! Good thing I had some left over. Can't go wrong that way you did it. As long as you prep right as you did and are neat the results are great. Nice work!

Has anyone used the Benjamin Moore Impervo. It is a metal and wood paint available in high gloss and low lustre. I have seen it used on wood but never on metal. I plan to try is on one of my pumps as there is no true value within 75 miles of home. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Matt,

I don't believe that you brush painted that pump. To prove that you in fact painted the pump with a brush, I will bring over one of my pumps for you to do.

Mat, Have you ever tried putting a complementary tint (ie color) into the the primer if the primer allows it? Or painted the complementary color over the primer and then paint your desired color over it. I think if you wanted something to look a little aged or have depth, that might do it. Experiment first on scrap metal, because you might not like the effect. Also the differences in value (ie light and dark) of the undercoating will also make a difference as will the number of layers on top.

And in the interest of full disclosure I have never done a pump so I may know diddly squat! grin I just have fun with colors ... the carousel horse I painted (pg 11 non-petro random pictures) I painted purple under the gold. Blue under the brown fur and for fun, turquoise under the gray. If you get close and look at the grey and gold, you can just about make out the undercolor (if you knew it was there), but from a distance, the horse looks more real and less plastiky than those animals painted over a just a primer. Good for a horse, but maybe not a pump?

BTW the pump looks great!

Nicole, I was not tring for the light and dark, that is just what I ended up with. The primer is a dark grey and was spray can, so I would not been able to tint it.
