Thought Fl. was on the Confederate side during the Civil War! What do they teach in schools there?

Dick.... you would be surprised at the number of people who don't even know who WON the Civil War. Go ahead and start asking some of the younger generation.... like I said..... you will be completely surprised.

Ok...after 33 years in high school I have a little experience here. You WOULD be surprised. Most don't even know WHO fought, WHERE it was fought, or WHEN! Don't EVEN get into WWI,WWII, Korea, or Vietnam. It isn't "relevant" to them. Go to YouTube and look at some Jaywalking episodes. Dave

I never thought it was anything other than the top of a soldiers cap.

According to Scott Benjamin/Wayne Henderson Gas Globes Volume 2 on page 234 under Rebel Oil Company they state "...crossed confederate flags with cannon barrel on top of globe face...DIXIE replaced REBEL on reproductions" So is it a hat or a gun barrel?? I stand by gun barrel.

Just because Benjamin and Henderson say it doesn't make it so.

Isn't the Rebel/Dixie globe a rather inexpensive item in the realm of gasoline globes. It probably doesn't merit a lot of detailed study. That is what is good about this hobby; one day when an alternative fuel is discovered/invented and gasoline becomes an alternative fuel, all this information which is being collected may be important to historians. Who knows?

Finally a good dispute/discussion on here about something gas related. Lets see the evidence for each side. Sure looks like the hat to me. John

I guess I am the only one that it looks like a gun barrel to. So I guess a hat it is. I did show the picture of the globe to 3 different people and just asked them what it was with no prompting and all three said gun.
So, why would a Southern oil company have a globe showing surrender or defeat with bowed heads showing the top of the hat as Dick stated and then have a name as Rebel? I would think if you are a Rebel looking down a gun barrel would be more appropriate.

Rifle/Pistol w/o a front sight? OR a Cannon that doesn't need a sight. But IF it were a Cannon, I'd think they would have showed the Carriage.

Looking at the Dixie globe, I see a hat.
One can see the brim, the crossed swords, the leather chin strap that sits on top of the brim and the raised "bowl" surrounding the flat crown.
At first glance it does look like a cannon barrel opening, until one looks closely, or at least that is what I see... LOL

Looks like a cap to me. and it's just the angle of the drawing, from above, not bowed in surrender. Like someone said about Benjamin, just because Dick said it, doesn't make it true. LOL It's his opinion. Like this is mine. we're all entitled to one.

A lot of things are determined by perspective. A tour guide in Cajun country described the war in the 1860s as "The War of Northern Aggression"
I thought it looked like a Confederate cap. But in my region, there were some folks on one side and some folks on the other at that time. Southern folks would bristle at the surrender perspective.
