Im moving the giant sign across town tomorrow and was thinking of screwing it down onto a 4x8 piece of plywood and strapping it onto the top of the hummer. Will this work or will it crack? Any thoughts?

I hope you're not serious about that! LOL
The amount of wind that you will catch with that setup, would be greater than you would want to risk, for the sake of damage to both the Hummer and the porcelain sign. Even laying flat on a wide trailer, you risk air getting under it and having it lift off into traffic! The best thing is to be able to lay it flat on a large trailer with carpet underneath the sign, and something that will provide downward pressure on the sign and then strap it to the trailer. Todays highway speeds can create a lot of air flow, especially over the top of a vehicle where it will be amplified!
If you do decide to move it that way, please have someone follow with a video camera as Americas Funniest Videos is always on the lookout for big wrecks like that! LOL

I would put it on the roof and hold your hand out window to hold on to it. It works for people leaving Home Depot
with plywood and fence ( for about 150') lol

Across town for some people is 50 miles at 70 mph!
For us small town folk, its 2 miles at 30 mph!
I'd still strap it down.

I think I would wrap it in a moving blanket, and duck tape and go for it. Are you moving in a hummer or just moving one sign unclear? If the porcleon isn't all ready cracking you should not hurt it. Friends truck and a six pack sounds much safer. If its wrapped in a blanket and resting on one side it will go all over the country with you.
Move the sign then do the six pack-we should not drink and drive. and leave the plywood at home.

I wouldn't rely on Bungee cords or Duct tape, use ratchet straps or 3/8" rope. Just because McGyver used Duct Tape for all kinds of stuff, You don't want to be the STAR in a YouTube Video!

yep didn't mean duct tape it to the hummer use the duct tape to secure blanket as if you was going to ship it in it. All though the magic of duct tape has finished a many a race,I wouldn't try it on the hummer!

Duct tape is a quick fix for a broken zipper on sleeping bag when camping or at a swap meet!
Bungee cords are good suspenders for holding yer pants up after belt breaks!
Just hope it ain't too short, or you'll have a higher pitch voice!

I agree with the other members that it would be a good idea to sandwich the sign between a moving blanket. The moving blanket can be secured with duct or moving tape. You want to ensure that the folded edge of the moving blanket is facing forward to prevent the blanket from undoing itself due to the wind force. Place a sheet of plywood on top of your roof top carrier to prevent the sign from flexing unevenly when you sinch it down with the tie straps. I would prefer to use nylon tie down straps over bungee cords. You want to use at least two straps; front to back and side to side to prevent the sign from moving backwards upon acceleration or forward when braking and side to side when turning. Ensure that it is strapped down tightly. Good luck with the transport.

I want to echo what was said about a strap attaching to front bumper. I was moving someone's stuff with my pickup and had the mattresses on top of the load, on the cab of my roof. I was driving the Washington beltway and on the exit off (thank goodness!) lost the mattresses. No one was close behind, though they would have seen the accident waiting to happen.

I would not have known had I not seen them landing out the side mirror. It's a wonder that no one was honking at me on the beltway because they must been pushed slowly backwards while I was driving and just happened to pass under the second side to side tie just as we exited.

Hey, I had just gotten my first pick up truck, I was twenty and didn't know better! smile Fortunately no one was killed for me to learn that lesson!

MOST OF MY LARGE 6' SIGNS AS WELL AS OTHER SIGNS WERE TRANSPORTED ON THE ROOF OF MY PICK-UP AT THE TIME WHICH HAD A ROOF RACK. WHAT I DID DO ON MY FIRST SHORT TRIP WAS JUST TIE DOWN THE SIGN TO THE RACK. WHEN I GOT UP TO 40MPH THE SIGN STARTED TO FLEX BETWEEN THE RACKS AND CREATE HAVOC. LESSON LEARNED...I JUST DROVE SLOWER AFTER A RE-TIEDOWN.

AFTER THAT, I USED A THICK PIECE OF FOAM BETWEEN THE RACKS THAT FIT TIGHTLY. NOW I COULD LAY THE SIGNS ON TOP, STRAP THEM DOWN AND DO 70MPH NO PROBLEM.

HOWEVER THERE WAS A TIME WHEN I HAD A DIE-CUT 6' PHILLIPS SHIELD UP THERE AND THIS HUGE SEMI FLEW BY AND I HAD TO DO SOME PRAYING....THAT THING LOOKED LIKE IT WAS GONNA GO AIRBORNE. LOL! IT WAS ACTUALLY FINE AFTER CHECKING...STILL PRETTY TIGHT TO THE ROOF.

Screw it to the plywood. Be sure to use fender washers. Use ratchet straps to secure the plywood and sign to the rack. You'll be good to go!
I did something very similar and didn't have any problem hauling the sign over 200 miles.
