I just picked up an old Wadhams oiler dated 1884 and got me to thinking how old some other brands you guys collect go back and what exists in collections from these. I am showing my two oldest items from Wadhams below.

First is a oiling can shaped paper weight or bill spike. It is marked Isted, Wadhams & Halsted Oils Milwaukee. Mr.Wadhams worked for Halsted beginning in 1875 and was a partener in the company from 1879 to 1883.

In 1883 he sold his partnership with Halsted and began Wadhams Magie Co. with Eldred Magie. He bough out Magie in 1888 and changed the name to Wadhams Oil And Grease Co.

Oil can bill spike era 1879-1883

Machine Oiler era 1883-1888

Not exactly the response I was expecting. I love that IDEAL pump!

Anybody going to beat the age of my Wadhams pieces? Doesn't look that way so far!

I collect 30`s and 40`s stuff, so the oldest piece or pieces would be early 30`s possibly late 20`s. They are a Tydol pump plate and two 16 1/2 inch Tydol globes.

Jim;
Hopefully this will help get it back on topic.
Don't have anything that old. This Needlebook, from the 1920's is probably the oldest piece I have.

Come on, lets see some Old Gas Stuff.

I have a 24' three piece Sinclair sign hanging on my shed. It isn't displayed as nicely as archer2's smile I always thought these signs were late 20's early 30's. Sinclair was founded in 1916...that would make this sign very early in the companies history.

I kind of thought a few collectors would like to show off the earliet piece in a companies history they managed to collect. Or just the oldest petroleum related item. I think the Wadhams pieces I show are very hard to beat for age, as it was very early in the lubricants industry history these come from.

No one at the Museum here [original home of UNION OIL Company] can date these 2 labels. Union Oil started in 1890.

& these labels have the 2nd logo used by Union Oil.

The oldest thing I have is a Polarine can,VERY ROUGH,that evidently contained some sort of transmission oil for motor cars and motor boats.Remins of graphics on each side of a very early car and a boat.

The dispensing spout on the top, whole thing soldered in,is a lift up and pour sort of thing embosssed with Pat Sept 13,1898 in the spout.I saved it because I think anything that shows a 1898 Pat date is worth saving. The can isn't that old but judging from the car on it it goes way back,

Nothing that old, my first thought was brass plate for transfer can. But knowing waters pierce became pierce petroleum it has to be sales receipt for heating oil 1888.
52 gallons- seven dollars and eighty cents-15 cents a gallon.

The date on the two piece Sinclair sign has to be a mistake. It's probably from 1938 or 1948. I don't think they even used that style of sign until the early 30's.
Maybe Wes Maxwell can chime in as he's very knowledgeable about Sinclair.

Not sure which of these is the oldest, but suspect they're all from the 1900-1910 period......

I'm thinking the one without the Gargoyle is a bit older

Maybe Mr Wadhams would know the age of this one

I love those Vacuum Oil Co. cans!

That Wadhams Badger can is very rare. Only have seen a few. I would say around 1913-1915

Scott B had an article in PCM about repainting a one piece etched globe and I think it was very similair to the Penn Empire sign. I will have to double check. It would date the sign to the late teens or 20's I would think.

Drive with Care and Buy Sinclair!! I buy Sinclair globes, signs, cans, ect.
