I have a 60" porcelain 76 sign that has been painted over then clearcoated. Is there a way to strip that off down to the original porcelain without hurting the original finish ? I would assume a commercial paint stripper from lowes or home depot, but we all know what happens when we *****-u-me. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. David

Porcelain should NOT be affected by any paint stripper. Just remember to use 'soft' scraping tools so as not to add any more damage to the sign.

Later . . .

I use CITRI-STRIP from Home Depot in an outside or well ventilated area. spray it on in sections and let it sit a little longer than what the can might suggest....doesn't hurt the porcelain and makes the paint more pliable and easy to remove. Once the stripper is cleaned away and you no longer need it, I use ииии (4 zero) steel wool and lacquer thinner to follow up on any leftover spots and crevices that the paint may've remained in.

Commercial paint stripper is fine! I use the liquid in a can because its cheaper than the aerosol. You sometimes need 2 coats if the paint is layered. A soft plastic scraper will work best and when its all clean, I use Mothers Metal Polish on it and I follow up with a good coat of Howards Feed & Wax! Really gives a great shine. Good luck and don't forget to post pictures of before and after!
